Dr. M. Thirumalai (born 1953), [1] Former Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur is a Tamil Scholar, Writer and former professor of Madurai Kamaraj University.

Birth

He was born at Thummusinampatti at Aruppukkottai taluk in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, India. [2]

Education

He completed his school studies in Sholavandan, Madurai district. He did his bachelor's and master's degrees in Thiagarajar College, Madurai. His doctorate was on the comparative study on the works of Jayakanthan and Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, in the department of Tamilology in Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. Under his guidance 30 scholars completed their Ph.D. [1]

Career

He held various positions in Madurai Kamaraj University for nearly 31 years. They include Controller of Examinations, Director of Publications and Special Officer. [2] In the Department of Comparative Studies in the Faculty of Tamilology of the university, he worked in various capacities including lecturer, professor and head of the department. [1] From 10 February 2012 to 9 February 2015, he was the Vice chancellor of the Tamil University, Thanjavur.

Paridhi, also referred to as Paridhiyaar, was a Tamil literary commentator known for his commentary on the Thirukkural. He was among the canon of ten medieval commentators of the Kural text most highly esteemed by scholars. He was also among the five ancient commentators whose commentaries had been preserved and made available to the Modern era, the others being Manakkudavar, Pari Perumal, Kaalingar, and Parimelalhagar.

The Ten Medieval Commentators were a canonical group of Tamil scholars whose commentaries on the ancient Indian didactic work of the Kural are esteemed by later scholars as worthy of critical analysis. These scholars lived in the Medieval era between the 10th and 13th centuries CE. Among these medieval commentaries, the commentaries of Manakkudavar, Kaalingar, and Parimelalhagar are considered pioneer by modern scholars.

Karunanidhi Classic Tamil Award, Muthamilkavalar Ki.Aa.Be. Vishwanatham Award has been given to him.

Kothandaramar Temple is a vaishnava temple located in Vaduvur, Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, India, dedicated to Rama, the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu. Egowriamman Temple is a Hindu temple at Vallam in Thanjavur in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, South India, India. There is a two-headed statue of Mother Ambika in the temple, sitting on a lotus-shaped Peeta. One face is ferocious, with long and sharp teeth showing her destructive side against the demons. The other face is calm, smiling and graceful, protecting the devotees and righteous from evils. The Mother has different weapons in her eight hands and also a parrot representing Mother Parvathi.
