The MSrE M-30 Fergeteg (Storm) was a Hungarian two seat advanced training glider. Originally designed in the early 1940s, its first flight was not made until 1950. Though five variants were developed, only six M-30s were built.
Design work om the Fergeteg began at the Aeroclub of the Technical University (MSrE) in 1942. The intention was to produce a high performance glider able to train pilots in advanced soaring techniques and also in aerobatics, with the performance to set two-seat records. Construction in MSrE's workshop began in 1944 but the partially built aircraft was destroyed in the siege of Budapest the following year. The project was revived in 1948 by the Hungarian National Aviation Association (OMRE). Construction was begun by Sirály Aircraft Ltd. and completed in OMRE's shop at Budaörs. It first flew in August 1950. In 1951 the Hungarian Aeronautical Association (MRSz) replaced OMRE, taking over its role. [1]
The M-30 Fergeteg was a wooden aircraft. Its two-piece, mid-set wing was built around single main spars and in plan had rectangular centre sections out to about one third of the span and trapezoidal outer panels with forward swept trailing edges. Ahead of the spar the wing was plywood-covered, forming a torsion resistant D-box. The inner sections were also ply-covered behind the spar and their trailing edges were filled with flaps. The outer panels were fabric-covered and carried split, differential ailerons which reached out to the tips and were interconnected with the flaps. Göppingen type spoilers, mounted behind the spar at the ends of the inner sections, opened both above and below the wing. [1]
The wing of the M-30B was very similar, though the ailerons were narrower and the flaps had been removed. A new riveted aluminium box structure strengthened the wing-fuselage joint. [2] [3] The only change on the M-30C was the return of the M-30's flaps, though with simplified linkage. [4] They were removed again on the M-30C/1 and the ailerons were give Frise-type leading edge balances. [5] The Super Fergeteg's wing had had very slightly forward swept leading edges, one piece ailerons and no flaps. [3] [6]
All Ferteteg variants had a plywood-covered, elliptical cross-section, semi-monocoque tapering fuselage. They differed in the increasing width of their cockpits and the more refined canopies of their enclosed, tandem, dual control cockpits. The high mounting of the horizontal tail on the tall, narrow integral fin also changed with the M-30C, which had a lower tail on a long dorsal step. The M-30C also introduced a broader rudder, otherwise like the curved, deep rudders of the earlier versions which reached down to the keel. All variants had similar horizontal tails, trapezoidal in plan out to rounded tips and with elevators requiring only small cut-outs for rudder movement because of their forward position. All variants landed on a semi-retractable monowheel under mid-chord with a rubber-sprung skid ahead of it and a small tail skid. [3]
Many of these modifications were triggered by a lack of rear seat headroom in the original. The introduction of a raised canopy induced tailplane vibrations which required further changes. Other persistent problems were high aileron control forces, [1] addressed through linkage changes and aerodynamic balancing, and high rudder control forces, which resulted in the M-30C's larger rudder. [4] In the end, only six Fergetegs were built.
The M-30C/1s, a final, single seat version, was intended to compete in the World Championships held in Leszno in 1954 (not the World Gliding Championships, flown at Camphill that year). It was not a success. [6]

The Broburn Wanderlust was a small, wooden, single-seat glider designed in the United Kingdom just after World War II. Only one was built, though it was well used.
The MSrE M-20 was an Hungarian primary glider with a better performance than the first generation of such aircraft. One of its designers was Ernő Rubik and the MSrE M-20 was his first major contribution. Only one was built.
The Rubik R-03 Szittya I was a Hungarian single-seat sailplane flown in the late 1930s. The design was developed through three improving variants. though only one of each was built.
The Jancsó-Szokolay M22 was a Hungarian single-seat sailplane first flown in 1937. Twenty were built and the type set several national records. Some remained in service up to about 1953.
The Rubik R-07a Tücsök {Cicada) and R-07b Vöcsök (Grebe) were two versions of a Hungarian primary trainer, differing most obviously in the pilot's seating. First flown in the late 1930s, about 530 were built, some remaining in service into the 1960s.
The Rubik R-08 Pilis was a Hungarian single-seat, advanced training glider first flown in 1939. It was very successful; 269 were built in batches, the first starting in 1939 and the last in 1956.
The Lampisch LS-16 was a Hungarian training glider of mixed construction. It was flown but not granted a Certificate of Airworthiness.
The Rubik R-12 Kevély (Proud) was a Hungarian advanced training glider. It was designed to provide safe cloud-flying experience and also raised the Hungarian height gained record several times. About fifty were built and operated between 1941 and 1951.
The Rubik R-15 Koma (Godfather) was a side-by-side seat Hungarian training glider designed to introduce pilots to winch-launching techniques. A second, very similar but single seat design, the Rubik R-16 Lepke, provided follow-up solo experience of the same techniques. Pairs were widely used by Hungarian glider clubs post-war, with 65 of each produced.
The Rubik R-16 Lepke (Butterfly) was a single seat Hungarian training glider designed to follow the very similar but two seat Rubik R-15 Koma in a winch-launch training programme. The Lepke provided solo experience of the techniques learned with an instructor in an aircraft with similar handling characteristics. That done, the Lepke could be used as a standard trainer to take its pilot to C-certificate level. The pair were widely used by Hungarian glider clubs post-war, with sixty-five of each produced.
The Rubik R-17 Móka (Joy) was a Hungarian aerobatic glider designed in the late 1930s. One prototype was built and first flown in 1944 but was destroyed near the end of World War II. Two more, with modified ailerons and a new fuselage, were built in 1950 but were abandoned after a fatal accident.
The 1943 Hungarian Rubik R-22 Futár (Courier) family of single seat, high performance sailplanes was developed between 1943 and 1958, though production did not begin until 1948. Four variants were serially produced, with the R-22S Június 18 the most numerous. There were several improvements within the types and there were three one-offs. Overall, 104 were built. They set numerous national records and one finished runner-up for distance at the 1958 VIIth World Gliding Championships, coming 11th overall.
The Kemény K-02 Szellő was a Hungarian training glider from the late 1940s. It was originally designed for a national contest to build a primary trainer but when this was won by the Rubik R-16 Lepke it was resigned to have more advanced soaring capability which could take pilots to their Silver C badge. Ninety were produced.
The MSRz Bene was a Hungarian two seat primary glider, first flown in 1952. By this time its competitor had been awarded a serial production order, so only one Bene was completed.
The MRSz Z-03A Ifjúság (Youth) was a Hungarian advanced training glider built in the 1950s, capable of both aerobatic and, with the revised Z-03B, blind flying instruction. They were removed from service in 1960 after fatigue analysis revealed that the fuselage structure at the wing attachment point had only a short life.
The MRSz Z-04 Béke (Peace) was a Hungarian aerobatic glider. First flown in 1955, it became a familiar display aircraft, though only one was built.
The MRSz A-08 Sirály (Seagull) was a Hungarian high performance glider designed to compete in the 1956 and 1958 World Gliding Championships. It was unsuccessful at this level but set a notable number of national records.
The Rubik R-23 Gébics (Shrike) was a Hungarian advanced training glider, the first of a series of metal-framed gliders designed by Ernő Rubik, though only one Gébics was built.
The Rubik R-31 Dupla (Double) was a Hungarian side-by-side seat training glider first flown in 1983. Disappointing performance and vibration problems prevented it going into production.
The PGE EV.1K Fecske (Swallow) was a high performance Hungarian sailplane designed and flown in the late 1960s. The sole example was destroyed in a fatal crash in 1970.
