The 2021 MTV Africa Music Awards ceremony was postponed. [1] The event was set to be held in Kampala, Uganda. The award ceremony, was to be aired live on MTV Base, and MTV was to air the event globally, in 180 countries, for the first time, according to Paul Grein of Billboard. [2] The show was to be hosted virtually by DJ Khaled in the City of Miami. [2] The ceremony was set to feature performances from various African celebrities; Wizkid, Sheebah Karungi, Diamond Platnumz, Khaligraph Jones, Nasty C, Suspect 95, Soraia Ramos, and Calema, among others. [3] The repeat show will also be aired on BET Africa, BET International, and MTV channels. [4]

It was due to bring back the Listener's Choice category, with top 20 "Listener's Choice" finalists. [5] The ceremony sponsor was Uganda, The Pearl of Africa. [6] On 4 February 2021, the organizers of the MAMA's Awards, announced the postponement of the award in a statement via E-mail with The Punch, it stated "MTV Base is concerned about the current health and safety challenges". [7] It sustained international campaign urging individual artists to boycott the event. "We will keep fans updated as we have more news," a statement tweeted by MTV Base Africa. [8] Following the allegations of human rights violations against the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, citing the post-election confinement of former presidential candidate Bobi Wine. [8] Christine Orr, started a petition to cancel the ceremony. [9]

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known by his stage name Bobi Wine, is a Ugandan politician, singer, and actor. He is a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East constituency in Wakiso District, in Uganda's Central Region. He also leads the National Unity Platform political party. In June 2019, he announced his candidacy for the 2021 Ugandan presidential election. He participated in the 2021 election where he lost to the incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, a result which Kyagulanyi and a large section of the public strongly disputed.

The MTV Africa Music Awards 2014 took place on 7 June 2014, at the Durban International Convention Centre. The awards aired live across Africa on MTV Base and MTV. The ceremony was sponsored by KwaZulu-Natal Province, Absolut and the City of Durban. The show was hosted by American comedian and actor Marlon Wayans. The ceremony featured performances from artists such as Miguel, Trey Songz, Flavour N'abania, French Montana, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Mafikizolo, Uhuru, Oskido, Professor, Diamond Platnumz, Phyno, Yuri Da Cunha, Sauti Sol, Sarkodie, Ice Prince, The Arrows, Khuli Chana, Dr SID, Fally Ipupa, Michael Lowman, Don Jazzy, DJ Clock, Beatenberg, DJ Kent, Big Nuz, Toofan, D'Banj, DJ Vigi, DJ Tira, DJ Buckz, and Burna Boy. On 27 May 2014, the nominees for the MTV Base Leadership Award were announced. On 28 May, MTV Base revealed Drake, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, and Miley Cyrus as the nominees for the Best International Act category. Davido and Mafikizolo received the most nominations with four each. Mi Casa and P-Square received three nominations. Diamond Platnumz and Wizkid were nominated twice for both Best Male and Best Collaboration.

Pius Mayanja known by his stage name Pallaso is a Ugandan recording artist, songwriter, producer and videographer. He sings in Luganda, mixes with English and sometimes Kiswahili. His music genre specialty is Afrobeats, Hip hop, Dancehall, Afropop, and RnB. His musical journey started back in 2000 when he started out at Leone Island, a musical group owned by his older brother, Dr. Jose Chameleone. He later moved to the US, where he lived for 10 years, before returning to Uganda in 2014. Upon his return, he set out to establish his now very celebrated musical career, and formed the group, "Team Good Music" which seems to be working well in the Uganda Music Industry.

Sheebah Karungi is a Ugandan musician, dancer and actress who debuted her acting career in Queen of Katwe as Shakira. After quitting Obsessions, a dance group she joined in 2006, she rose to recognition upon the release of her hit single "Ice Cream". In 2014, she released her debut project Ice Cream, a five-track EP which did well commercially and led her to win back-to-back HiPipo Music Awards Best Female Artist in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. She also won the Artist of the Year award twice, in 2017, 2018, and 2019 at the HiPipo Music Awards.

The 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards were held on October 22, 2016, at Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa. It recognised and rewarded musicians and achievers who made an impact on African music and youth culture during the eligibility period. The awards ceremony aired live on MTV Base, MTV and BET. It was transmitted worldwide on partner stations and content platforms, including BET International. The show was hosted by Nomzamo Mbatha, Yemi Alade and Bonang Matheba. It featured performances from Future, Yemi Alade, Nasty C, Babes Wodumo, Cassper Nyovest and Patoranking, among others.

Benjamin Mugisha, popularly known by his stage name The Ben is a Rwandan artist and songwriter. In 2008, he was awarded as the "Best Afro R&B Singer of the Year" by Salax Music awards.

Raymond Shaban Mwakyusa, better known by his stage name Rayvanny, is a Tanzanian musician, songwriter and recording artist who was signed under WCB Wasafi record label until July 2022. He was born and raised in Nzovwe ward of Mbeya city, located in Mbeya Region. He is the most successful bongo flava musician in Tanzania from Mbeya region. He is the founder and CEO of Next Level Music. Rayvanny is best known by his song "Kwetu", which introduced him to the world. Rayvanny was mentioned by MTV Base among "Acts To Look Out For" in 2017.

Enock Kisakye, better known as Producer Eno Beats, is a Ugandan music producer. He is the Chief executive officer at Eno Beats Production Limited located in Makindye, Kampala. Eno has worked with most of Uganda's top musicians including Bebe Cool, DR Jose Chameleone, Sheebah Karungi, Eddy Kenzo, among others. He was nominated in the All Africa Music Awards 2018 as Best Audio Producer and he won the HIPIPO MUSIC AWARDS as Audio Producer of the Year 2018. Walukagga Shafik, is a Ugandan rapper better known by his stage name Fik Fameica a.k.a. Fresh Bwoy. He makes music in genres like rap, hiphop, afrobeat and afropop .His musical debut came in 2015 with "Pistol" under the Black Man Town music label, led by a Ugandan music icon Geosteady. His later songs, "Salawo" and "Mbega Wa Bbaala" gained him a recording contract with Kama Ivien Management. His club hit "Batuwulira" followed by "Byenyenya" followed made him the most booked Ugandan artist in 2017. Fik won awards in Uganda and East Africa and went on to win Uganda's most popular artist in 2017. In 2018, he was crowned Breakthrough Artist, Best in Hip-Hop and Best Rap Song for his track "Kutama" at the annual HiPipo Awards.

The 8th African Muzik Magazine Awards ceremony was held on 12 December 2021, virtually with the theme, "Flavors of Africa". The awards celebrated African music and African artists. The nominees were announced on 4 October 2021. Burna Boy, Diamond Platnumz and Tayc received the most nominations with six each, ahead of Wizkid, Fally Ipupa and Dadju, who were tied for the second-most nominations with five nods each.
