Herma A was a 411  GRT Empire F type coaster that was built as Empire Faversham in 1944 by Henry Scarr Ltd, Hessle for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold in 1947 and renamed Fawdon. A further sale in 1952 saw her renamed Maduni. In 1970, she was sold to Trinidad and renamed Herma A. She foundered at Port of Spain in 1975 during a storm.

Description

The ship was an Empire F type coaster built in 1944 by Henry Scarr Ltd, Hessle, United Kingdom. [1]

The ship was 142 feet 2 inches (43.33 m) long, with a beam of 27 feet 0 inches (8.23 m). She had a depth of 8 feet 5 inches (2.57 m). She was assessed at 411  GRT, 190  NRT . [2]

The ship was propelled by a four-stroke Single Cycle, Single Action diesel engine, which had seven cylinders of 8¾ inches (22 cm) diameter by 11½ inches (30 cm) stroke driving a screw propeller. The engine was built by Mirrlees, Bickerton and Day Ltd, Stockport, Cheshire. It was rated at 42 nhp. [2]

History

The ship was built by Henry Scarr Ltd, Hessle, United Kingdom. She was laid down as CHANT 17 and later renamed Fabric 17 but was launched as Empire Faversham in June 1944 and completed in September 1944. Built for the MOWT, [1] she was placed under the management of R H Hunt Ltd. The United Kingdom Official Number 180292 and Code Letters MLLZ were allocated. Her port of registry was Hull. [2] Little is known of her history during World War II, but her Chief Steward was killed by enemy action on 5 November 1944. [3]

Empire Faversham was sold in 1947 to the Whitehaven Shipping Co Ltd and was renamed Fawdon. She was operated under the management of Anthony & Bainbridge Ltd. In 1952, Fawdon was sold to Booker Brothers, McConnell & Co Ltd, Hull and was renamed Maduni. A new diesel engine was fitted in 1959. In 1970, Maduni was sold to Pedonomou Lines Ltd, Trinidad and was renamed Herma A. She foundered on 19 July 1975 in a storm while moored at Port of Spain, Trinidad. [1]

In 1947 she was sold and renamed Humbergate. Another sale in 1955 saw her renamed Springwear. In 1959, she was sold and renamed Lynnwear. In 1962 she was sold to Panama and renamed Dumbo. In 1968 she was arrested in Spain and sold by Court Order. She then ran aground and the sale was cancelled after the ship was declared a constructive total loss. Another sale resulted in plans to turn her into a floating nightclub, but these failed to come to fruition and she was scrapped c1970.

Ricardor Manuel was an 873 GRT coaster which was built in 1940 by Goole Shipbuilding & Repairing Co Ltd, Goole as Empire Cliff for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1945 she was sold and renamed Marna. A further sale in 1960 saw her renamed Harcliff. In 1963, she was sold to a Panamanian company and renamed Ricardo Manuel. She sank in 1971 after a collision with another ship at the entrance to Casablanca harbour, Morocco.

Seashell was a 312 GRT coaster that was built in 1943 by Lidingö Nya Varv & Vaerkstaeder, Lidingö, Sweden for German owners. She was seized by the Allies at Hamburg and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condart. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and was renamed Fredor. In 1952, she was lengthened, with her GRT rising to 452. A sale in 1955 saw her renamed Seashell. She served until 1968 when she was scrapped.

Clary was a 215 GRT coaster that was built in 1939 by Van Diepen Scheepswerf Gebroeders NV, Waterhuizen, Netherlands, for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Nyborg, Denmark and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condee. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and was renamed Condee. In 1950, a further sale saw her renamed Aisne. In 1960, she was sold to Jersey and renamed Clary. In 1975, she was sold to Algerian owners and renamed Marie Elizabeth but on 20 February 1976 she caught fire and was declared a constructive total loss.

Tyrronall was a 248 GRT Coaster that was built in 1935 as the 199 GRT schooner Heimat by Flender Werke AG, Lübeck, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Contamar.

Malmö was a 981 GRT coaster that was built in 1918 by H C Stülcken Sohn, Hamburg, Germany for German owners. Although she sank after hitting a mine in 1942, she was salvaged and repaired and then returned to service. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Contay. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Reykjanes. She served until 1953 when she was scrapped.

Ulysses was a 332 GRT coastal trading vessel that was built in 1941 as Empire Creek by J Pollock & Sons, Faversham, United Kingdom. She was built for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Empire Creek survived being bombed shortly after entering service. In 1946, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Springcreek. Further sales in 1948 and 1951 saw her named Goldcreek and Milborne respectively. In 1964, she was sold to Greece and renamed Georgios. In 1978, she was sold to Panama and renamed Ulysses, serving until she ran aground near Naples, Italy in 1979 and was wrecked.

Sand Star was a 489 GRT dredger that was built in 1943 as the coaster Empire Dyke Clelands (Successors) Ltd, Wallsend, Northumberland, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was transferred to the Netherlands in 1943 and renamed Prinses Margriet. In 1954, she was sold to the United Kingdom and renamed Sand Star. She served until 1966 when she sank following a collision.

MV Murell was a 319 GRT coaster that was built in 1940 as Fiddown by Goole Shipbuilding & Repairing Co Ltd, Goole, Yorkshire, United Kingdom for S Morris Ltd. In 1940, she was run down and sunk by HMS Campbelltown in the Mersey Estuary. She was salvaged in 1942, repaired and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT), renamed Empire Estuary. She was sold into merchant service in 1946 and renamed Goldfawn. A further sale in 1952 saw her renamed Creekdawn. A sale to an Irish company in 1954 saw her renamed Murell. She served until 1972, when she was scrapped.

Lizzonia was a 401 GRT Empire F type coaster that was built in 1944 by Goole Shipbuilding & Repairing Ltd, Goole, United Kingdom as Empire Farouche for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1946, she was sold and renamed Lizzonia. She was re-engined in 1956 and sank in 1961 following a collision with another vessel.

Mahiri was a 411 GRT Empire F type coaster that was built in 1944 by Henry Scarr Ltd, Hessle, United Kingdom, as Empire Farringdon for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold in 1946 and renamed Susie Olivier. A further sale in 1948 saw her renamed Mahiri. She served until 1974, when she sprang a leak and foundered.

Fosdyke Trader was a 411 GRT Empire F type coaster that was built in 1944 by Henry Scarr Ltd, Hessle, United Kingdom as Empire Fathom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold in 1946 and renamed Fosdyke Trader. In 1961, she was sold to Canada and renamed Fort Carillon. Further sales in 1972 and 1975 saw her renamed Janolyne and Fermont. A proposed conversion to a floating restaurant fell through and she was sold in 1990 to an American and renamed Mon Ami. She was wrecked on 17 November 1991 on Seal Island, Canada.
