MV Kurdistan, initially named Frank D. Moores, was an oil tanker built in 1973 for the American-Canadian trade. In 1979, she became stuck in ice and suffered a cataphoric structural failure, resulting in her bow sheering off and the spilling of 10,000 tons of oil off Nova Scotia, Canada.
The cause of the accident was blamed on defective welding in her keel. Following the accident, her bow was rebuilt and the ship was sold off under a new name. She was transferred between owners before she was scrapped in 2000.
In December 1973, the Come by Chance Refinery in Newfoundland began operations, promising to produce 100,000 barrels of oil a day. [3] Anticipating demand from the new refinery, the Nile Steamship Company, itself a subsidiary of Common Brothers, ordered two oil tankers from Swan Hunter shipbuilders at a combined cost of $15 million ($102,953,523 in 2023). The two ships were built to carry jet fuel from the refinery to Boston's Logan International Airport and New York City's John F. Kennedy Airport. [4] [5] [6] The first tanker was named the Joseph R. Smallwood, named after Joseph Smallwood, premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, who was a staunch supporter of the refinery. [5] [3] Her sistership was christened Frank D. Moores, named after Frank Moores, premier when the refinery opened. [7] [8] The Frank D. Moores was launched by the namesake's two daughters in February 1973 and completed in June of the same year. As designed, her superstructure, funnel, and engine was located on the stern, joined by a raised forecastle on the bow and an otherwise clear deck. [9] She was rated as Ice Classification One by Lloyd's Register, indicating she could operate without a breaker in icy waters. [6]
The ship's hold was separated into six tanks, which were further divided into a center tank and a wing tank on either side. [10] : 4
A common trend during the 1970s was the use of relatively unstudied high-strength steel in ship construction. It was believed that the stronger steel would be able to resist stress better than the older types of steel, reducing the need for structural redundancies. What was not known at the time was that the stronger steel was as equally vulnerable to fatigue fractures as the normal steel, leading to a rise in structural failures of such vessels built during the decade. [11]
On 16 July 1975, she collided with the Mount Hope Bridge while traveling to Tiverton, Rhode Island at night in heavy fog. The bridge was severely damaged with the north tower nearly sheered apart, requiring two years of repairs and the jacking of the tower to allow the removal of damaged steel. The damage to the bridge totaled out to be $600,000 ($3,016,804 in 2023). [12] The tanker on the other hand was relatively unaffected, suffering only slight damage to the bow and responsibility for the accident. [13]
Ever since the two ships were under construction, it was planned that the refinery's parent company would operate the duo. As such, the Newfoundland Refining Company was established and chartered both tankers from Nile Steamship for 16 years. [5] [14] However, the Come by Chance Refinery - and Newfoundland Refining - went bankrupt in 1976. [3]
Following the dissolution of her operator, Nile Steamship renamed her to Kurdistan, keeping the ship to operate along the Eastern coast of Canada. [1]
While traveling from Point Tupper, Nova Scotia to Sept-Îles, Quebec on 15 March 1979, laden with 30,000 tons of heated Bunker c oil, Kurdistan encountered heavy winter pack ice in the Cabot Strait around noon and was unable to proceed. The weather was poor and the ship reported that it was rolling heavily. [15] After being immobilized in the ice for approximately eight hours the tanker turned and headed towards the open sea in an effort to get around the pack ice. Almost immediately after clearing the ice, the tanker was caught in a heavy swell and crew reported hearing a "thud and a shudder", and Kurdistan's hull began to crack vertically in two separate areas. [15] Oil began leaking from a vertical crack in the sides of the vessel's No.3 wing tanks. [15] The Kurdistan crew managed to pump a substantial amount of the oil into the remaining undamaged tanks within the vessel, limiting what could have been a more catastrophic spill, before the ship's bow section broke completely apart from the vessel and remained partially afloat. [15] The crew were later rescued by the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Sir William Alexander.
In the disaster, 10,000 tons of heavy oil was ultimately spilled into the Cabot Strait, with the clean-up efforts along Cape Breton Island's western coastline taking ten months to complete. [16] It was later revealed that the disaster marked the first time Kurdistan had ever carried a cargo of heated oil. [15]
The stern section remained afloat and was towed into Port Hastings, Nova Scotia where the remaining 16,000 tonnes of oil was off-loaded once weather had improved. What remained of Kurdistan was later towed to Europe and retrofitted with a new hull before returning to service as the Simonburn in November 1979. [17] The severed bow section was towed to deep water south of Sable Island and sunk by gunfire from HMCS Margaree on 1 April 1979. [16] [18] [19]
An inquiry later blamed the wreck on human error, with faulty welding to the ship's hull made shortly before the incident being deemed responsible. [16]
The cause of the crack was determined to be a defective butt weld in the port-side bilge keel. The area had been damaged in 1975 and repaired in 1977. [15] It was also determined that the displacement of heated oil by cold water entering the cargo tanks contributed to the disaster. [15]

Immediately following the accident, Kurdistan was brought into drydock and fitted with a new bow. While in drydock, she was transferred to the Hindustan Steam Shipping Company, itself managed by Common Brothers. Under her new operators, the ship was renamed Simonburn in 1979. [1] [20] [21] The next year, the ship was transferred to the Northumbrian Shipping Company, also a part of Common Bros. Under her new owners, she was renamed to Aura Bravery. [1] [22]
Her purchase while in drydock left Common Brothers to cover the cost of reconstruction, who financed the move with bank loans in hopes to achieve questionable profits previously forecasted. By 1982, the company had missed the forecasted profits and approached a crisis as its stock rapidly deflated, interest on debt mounted, and began losing money due to failed investments. To inject cash into the failing company, Aura Bravery was sold off. [21] [23]
MT Petali is an Aframax crude oil tanker. Formerly known as Mastera for almost two decades and briefly as Mikines in early 2022 and Alma until September 2023, she and her sister ship Tempera were the first ships to utilize the double acting tanker (DAT) concept in which the vessel is designed to travel ahead in open water and astern in severe ice conditions. The icebreaking tanker was built to transport crude oil year-round from the Russian oil terminal in Primorsk to Neste Oil refineries in Porvoo and Naantali.
La Noumbi is a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit operated by Perenco. The vessel, converted from the former Finnish Aframax crude oil tanker Tempera by Keppel Corporation, will replace an older FPSO unit in the Yombo field off the Republic of Congo in 2018.
Hammac was a steam tank ship built in 1920–1921 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation of Alameda for the United States Shipping Board as part of the wartime shipbuilding program of the Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC) to restore the nation's Merchant Marine. Early in 1923 the vessel together with two other tankers was sold to General Petroleum Corporation and renamed Emidio. The tanker spent the vast majority of her career carrying oil along the West Coast of the United States as well as between West and East coast. In December 1941 she was shelled and damaged by the Japanese submarine I-17 and eventually wrecked with a loss of five crewmen.
SS Georgia was an oil tanker that was built in the United States in 1908 as Texas and spent most of her career in the United States Merchant Marine. In 1917 she was renamed Georgia. In 1927 she was transferred to Dutch ownership, and shortly thereafter ran aground and was lost on Haisborough Sands off the coast of Norfolk, England.
Silvanus was a steam tanker built in 1920–1921 by the Southwestern Shipbuilding & Drydock Company of San Pedro for the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company with the intention of transporting oil and petroleum products between Dutch East Indies and various destinations in Europe and the Far East. The tanker was employed in this capacity through the first part of 1926. In April 1926 Silvanus collided with the tanker Thomas H. Wheeler in the Mississippi River, resulting in the explosion and death of 26 seamen. Silvanus was declared a total loss and sold at auction to the newly formed Petroleum Navigation Company of Texas. The tanker was rebuilt and renamed Papoose and started operating in March 1927. In March 1942, she was attacked by German U-boat U-124 off the coast of North Carolina. The ship drifted for several days and eventually sank in 200 feet (61 m) of water off Oregon Inlet.
An oil tanker, also known as a petroleum tanker, is a ship designed for the bulk transport of oil or its products. There are two basic types of oil tankers: crude tankers and product tankers. Crude tankers move large quantities of unrefined crude oil from its point of extraction to refineries. Product tankers, generally much smaller, are designed to move refined products from refineries to points near consuming markets.
W. L. Steed was a steam tanker built in 1917–1918 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation of Quincy for Pan American Petroleum and Transport Company, with intention of transporting oil and petroleum products between Mexican and Gulf ports and the Northeast of the United States. The ship was briefly requisitioned by the US Government during World War I but returned to commercial service in early 1919. The ship was named after William L. Steed, superintendent of the Mexican Petroleum Company of California.

Montebello was a steam oil tanker built in 1920–1921 by the Southwestern Shipbuilding Co. of San Pedro for Union Oil Company. It was designed to carry oil and petroleum products along the West Coast of the United States and Canada, as well as between the United States and Chile. In December 1941 the tanker was sunk on one of her regular trips by the Japanese submarine I-21.
Sylvan Arrow was a steam tanker built in 1917–1918 by New York Shipbuilding Co. of Camden for Standard Oil Company, with intention of transporting oil and petroleum products between United States and ports in the Far East. The ship was briefly requisitioned by the US Government during World War I but returned to commercial service in early 1919.
MT Varzuga was an ice-strengthened product tanker that sailed under the Finnish flag in 1977–2003 and under the Russian flag in 2003–2021. After her modernization in 1993, she became the first merchant ship to be equipped with Azipod, an electric azimuthing propulsion unit developed in Finland in the late 1980s. She was also the first non-Soviet ship to transit the Northern Sea Route.
Odyssey, which previously went by the name Oriental Phoenix, was an oil tanker in operation from 1971 to November 10, 1988, when an explosion caused it to sink in the North Atlantic off the coast of Canada. The resulting spill remains one of the largest oil spills in world history. The tanker was 700 nautical miles off the coast of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia when it sank and released 132,157 tons of oil into the ocean, valued at some $86.7 million (2010). By way of comparison, four times as much oil was spilled by the Odyssey as from the much more famous Exxon Valdez.
Kontio is a Finnish state-owned icebreaker. Built by Wärtsilä Helsinki shipyard in 1987 as a replacement for the aging Karhu-class icebreakers, she and her sister ship Otso were the first Finnish post-war icebreaker to be built without bow propellers.
The Venpet–Venoil collision was a maritime accident involving sister supertankers; the Liberian-registered Venoil and Venpet, in dense fog off the coast of South Africa on 16 December 1977. The tankers were travelling in opposite directions; the Venoil fully laden with over 250,000 tonnes of crude oil bound for Halifax, Canada, and the Venpet, travelling in ballast, headed for Kharg Island, Iran. The Venoil ploughed into the Venpet, eventually leading to the spilling of approximately 26,600–30,500 tonnes of crude oil. The tankers were sister ships owned and operated by Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Both ships were crewed by Taiwanese sailors.
The SS Arrow was an oil tanker built by Bethlehem Steel Company, Sparrows Point, Baltimore, Maryland, in 1948 as the tanker Olympic Games.
Silverlip was a steam tanker built in 1902 by the W.G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Company of Walker for Sir Marcus Samuel owner and chairman of Shell Transport & Trading Company of London. The ship was designed and built to carry liquid cargo and spent her career carrying petroleum products from Borneo and Texas to United Kingdom and Europe.
Kigoriak was a Canadian and later Russian icebreaking anchor handling tug supply vessel. Built by Saint John Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company for Canadian Marine Drilling (Canmar) in 1979 as Canmar Kigoriak, she was the first commercial icebreaking vessel developed to support offshore oil exploration in the Beaufort Sea.
Lyman Stewart was a steam tanker built in 1914 by Union Iron Works Company of San Francisco for the Union Oil Company of California, with intention of transporting oil and petroleum products to ports along the West Coast of the United States and Canada. The ship was named after Lyman Stewart, the president of the Union Oil Co. In October 1922 the tanker collided with another steamer, SS Walter Luckenbach, and was beached to avoid sinking but was subsequently declared a total loss.
USCGC Anthony Petit (WLM-558) is a Keeper-class coastal buoy tender of the United States Coast Guard. Launched in 1999, she has served her entire career maintaining navigational aids in Southeast Alaska. She is assigned to the Seventeenth Coast Guard District.
R. W. Gallagher was a steam turbine-powered tanker built in 1938 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation of Quincy for Standard Oil Company of New Jersey with intention of operating between the oil-producing ports of the southern United States and Mexico and the Northeast. The tanker spent her entire career in coastwise trade and was torpedoed and sunk on one of regular journeys in July 1942 by German submarine U-67.
