MV Zelek Star is a Turkish cargo ship which ran aground in two separate occasions in 2013 and 2019.
Zelek Star is a general cargo ship with a gross tonnage of 2,645 GT and deadweight of 4,500 DWT. It has a length of 90.7 metres (298 ft) and a beam of 14.2 metres (47 ft). It is propelled by a single screw. The ship's port of registry is Panama, and it is owned by the Turkish company Fuden Shipping & Trading. [1] [2]
The ship's keel was laid down in Taixing, China, under the name Bao Tai. It was built by Taizhou Yongtai Shipbuilding and was launched on 14 December 2005 and completed on 14 March 2005. Later that year, its name was changed to Zelek Star. [1] [2]
On 6 December 2013, Zelek Star was transiting through the Dnieper River to Constanta with a cargo of 4,452 tons of ammonium sulfate. The ship ran aground in the estuary off Karantinniy island, Ukraine. A tug was dispatched, which was able to assist in refloating Zelek Star without any injury to the crew or environmental contamination. [3] [4]
On 25 December 2019, Zelek Star was anchored off Ashdod, Israel, while transporting cement and other products from Greece. [5] That night, a strong wind caused the ship to drag anchor and drift into the beach, grounding near the port breakwater. [6] Zelek Star remained grounded on the beach until March 2020, when it was refloated after a channel had been dredged out to deeper waters. [7]
The Governor Ames was the first five-masted schooner. In the late 19th century, she was the world's largest cargo vessel.
Alkimos was a Greek-owned merchant ship which was wrecked on the coast north of Perth, Western Australia in 1963. A nearby locality was later named after the vessel. The wreck is a popular diving venue.
Pasha Bulker, later known as MV Drake and now MV Anthea, is a Panamax bulk carrier of 76,741 tonnes deadweight (DWT) operated by the Lauritzen Bulkers shipping company and owned by Japanese Disponent Owners. While waiting in the open ocean outside Newcastle harbour to load coal, Pasha Bulker ran aground during a major storm on 8 June 2007 on Nobbys Beach, New South Wales, Australia. It was refloated and moved to a safe location offshore on 2 July 2007 before being towed to Japan for major repairs on 26 July 2007.
MT Independența ("Independence") was a large Romanian crude oil carrier. She collided in 1979 with a Greek freighter at the southern entrance of Bosphorus, Turkey, and exploded. She caught fire and grounded. Almost all of the tanker's crew members died. The wreck of the Independența burned for weeks, causing heavy air and sea pollution in the Istanbul area and the Sea of Marmara.
Ikan Tanda was a Japanese built cargo carrier which ran aground off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, in 2001.
MT Phoenix was a tanker which went aground in heavy seas at Sheffield Beach just north of Ballito near Durban, South Africa on the morning of 26 July 2011. The vessel was on its way to India to be scrapped when it ran aground. After three attempts, it was refloated, towed and then scuttled and sunk in 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) of water, about 80 kilometres (43 nmi) offshore of Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. The vessel was reportedly owned by either Suhair Khan of Dubai or Marika Investments, Lagos, Nigeria.
MV Canadian Miner was a Canadian laker that was part of the fleet of Upper Lakes Shipping from 1994–2011. Initially constructed as Maplecliffe Hall in 1966, the ship was renamed Lemoyne in 1988 before becoming Canadian Miner in 1994. In 2011, the name was shortened to just Miner. In 2011 the vessel was taken out of service and sold for scrapping. While en route to the scrapyard in Turkey, the ship ran aground off Nova Scotia in 2011. The vessel was broken up in 2014 in Nova Scotia.
Kuzma Minin was a bulk carrier, registered in Murmansk, Russia. The bulk carrier delivered cargo around northern Europe, and visits ports such as Arkhangelsk, Gdańsk, Riga and Port Talbot. The name is given to commemorate Kuzma Minin, a hero of Russian resistance during the Time of Troubles.
MV Höegh Osaka is a roll-on/roll-off car carrier ship that was built in 2000 as Maersk Wind for A P Møller, Singapore. She was sold to Höegh Autoliners in 2008 and later renamed Höegh Osaka in August 2011. On 3 January 2015 she developed a severe list and was intentionally grounded in the Solent. Her 24 crew and a pilot were subsequently rescued.
Ever Given is one of the largest container ships in the world. The ship is owned by Shoei Kisen Kaisha, and is time chartered and operated by container transportation and shipping company Evergreen Marine, headquartered in Luzhu, Taoyuan, Taiwan. Ever Given is registered in Panama and her technical management is the responsibility of the German ship management company Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement.
The MV Heng Tong 77 was a Panama-registered cargo ship which became stranded near Karachi in July 2021.
MV SMP Novodvinsk is a Russian general cargo ship which ran aground and was detained in Szczecin, Poland, following the outbreak of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
MV Zhe Hai 168 is a Chinese Supramax bulk carrier operated by Zhejiang Shipping Group that ran aground in the Philippines in April 2016 and April 2023. It has an overall length of 190 m (620 ft), a width of 32.3 m (106 ft), and a draft of 11.3 m (37 ft). It has a gross tonnage of 33,147 GT and a carrying capacity of 57,033 DWT.
