Ma Ngwe Taung (Burmese : မငွေတောင်) is a Burmese nat. [1] She is the spirit of a Hindu woman of Burmese Indian descent, who died near Monywa. [1] An annual festival is held every year in her honor. [1] As Ngwe Taung was Hindu, beef offerings are forbidden. [1]

Burmese language language spoken in Myanmar

The Burmese language is the Sino-Tibetan language spoken in Myanmar where it is an official language and the language of the Bamar people, the country's principal ethnic group. Although the Constitution of Myanmar officially recognizes the English name of the language as the Myanmar language, most English speakers continue to refer to the language as Burmese, after Burma, the older name for Myanmar. In 2007, it was spoken as a first language by 33 million, primarily the Bamar (Burman) people and related ethnic groups, and as a second language by 10 million, particularly ethnic minorities in Myanmar and neighboring countries.

Nat (spirit) spirits worshipped in Myanmar

The nats are spirits worshipped in Myanmar in conjunction with Buddhism. They are divided between the 37 Great Nats and all the rest. Almost all of the 37 Great Nats were human beings who met violent deaths. They may thus also be called nat sein. The word 'sein', while meaning 'green', is being used to mean 'raw' in this context. There are however two types of nats in Burmese Buddhist belief.

Min Kyawzwa

Min Kyawzwa, is one of the 37 nats in the official pantheon of Burmese nats. He is a composite representation of multiple historical personalities. One version puts him as a son of King Theinhko of Pagan; he was murdered by his brother. Another version puts him as an adviser to King Alaungsithu of Pagan; he died an alcoholic. Another puts him as Crown Prince Minye Kyawswa of Ava, who fell in action in the Forty Years' War. Yet another version puts him as a son of the Lord of Pyay and Kuni Devi. He reportedly was a "drunkard and cock fighter and also a good rider", killed by his victims turned devils.

Maung Po Tu

Maung Po Tu is one of the 37 nats in the Burmese pantheon of nats. He was a tea trader during the reign of King Minkhaung I of Ava, and was killed by a tiger on his way to Shan State. He is portrayed sitting on a tiger, a stick in right hand and left hand on his thigh. Maung Po Tu is considered the guardian of traders and their business.

Shwe Hpyin Nyidaw

Shwe Hpyin Nyidaw, also called Shwe Hpyin Nge or Min Lay, is one of the 37 nats in the official pantheon of Burmese nats. Together known as Shwe Hpyin Nyinaung (Brothers) or Taungbyon Min Nyinaung, he and his brother Shwe Hpyin Naungdaw were sons of Byatta, the royal messenger, and Me Wunna, a flower-eating ogress from Mount Popa, during the reign of King Anawrahta of Bagan. They were killed for neglecting their duty to provide a brick each thus leaving gaps in Taungbyone Pagoda, which was built by King Anawrahta. They are portrayed on pedestals, one lying down and the other upright with his sword shouldered arrogantly. Me Wunna died of a broken heart after Byatta was killed and later their sons were taken away on the king's orders. She became a nat known as Popa Medaw.

Anauk Mibaya

Anauk Mibaya is one of 37 nats in the official Burmese pantheon of nats. She was Queen Shin Mi-Nauk, consort of King Minkhaung I and mother of Crown Prince Minye Kyawswa and King Thihathu of Ava. Her son Thihathu also entered the pantheon as Aung Pinle Hsinbyushin.

Bago Medaw

Bago Medaw is a Burmese nat commonly venerated in the vicinity of Bago, although worship is seen throughout Lower Burma. Bago Medaw is depicted as a maiden wearing a water buffalo skull, representing a female buffalo named Nankaraing, that nursed the traditional founders of Hanthawaddy, two brothers named Thamala and Wimala. She was subsequently killed by them. She is believed to protect the family and home, and grants wishes to those she favors.

Adam, Eve and Datsa or Ar-Dan-Yal-Aye-Wa-Yal-Da-Tha-Yal is a 2011 Burmese drama film produced by Heart & Soul Film Production. It was based on Ponnya Khin's novel Achit or Winkabar. It was directed by Wyne. Pyay Ti Oo, Sai Sai Kham Hlaing and Thet Mon Myint starred as the main characters. This film showed in Singapore on 4 September 2011 and Los Angeles in United States on 19 and 20 November 2011.

Min Aung Myat was the chief queen consort of King Naratheinkha, and the Queen of the Southern Palace of King Sithu II of the Pagan Dynasty of Myanmar (Burma). King Sithu I and Queen Khin U were her maternal grandparents. Naratheinkha and Sithu II were her second cousins. She and Naratheinkha were married by their grandfather king. She had a daughter Saw Pyei Chantha with Naratheinkha but their child died in early 1170s during the reign of Naratheinkha.

Ma Phae Wah is a prominent Burmese nat. She was known to be a guardian spirit of the graveyards and cemeteries in Myanmar.

Ponnya Khin is a Burmese novel author and writer. She is one of the famous writer in Myanmar, and her best-selling novel was Kya Ma Ka Hnin Si Par Maung.
