Maclean Daniel Ayres, better known as Mac Ayres, is an American R&B singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.

Personal life

Ayres grew up in Sea Cliff, New York, and graduated from North Shore High School. He sang in various choral groups as a child, including the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and the North Shore High School Madrigals. [1] [ dead link ] He became friends with his drummer, Chris Anderson, during high school and they began playing together at age 15. [2] He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, from 2014 to 2017 before dropping out to work on his Drive Slow EP. [3]

Career

Ayres released his debut EP entitled I Know Enough in 2016 via SoundCloud. The EP has since been mostly deleted, with the song "Wrong" being the remaining song on the SoundCloud playlist. [4] This was followed a year later by his second EP Drive Slow in 2017. [5] [1] He released his full-length debut album, Something to Feel, in 2018. [3] [6] Ayres' second full-length album, Juicebox, was released in 2019. [7] His second EP Magic 8Ball was released on January 8, 2021. Two years later, on March 16, 2023, his third album Comfortable Enough was released.

In November 2024, Mac Ayres released Cloudy, a compilation of loose tracks he released on SoundCloud from 2016 to 2019. [8]

Musical influences

In an interview with music blog EarToTheGround Music, Ayres mentioned among his musical influences "Teddy Pendergrass, most of Motown, and especially the iconic Stevie Wonder". His defining artist was D'Angelo, whose album Voodoo "felt like what music is supposed to be to me," according to Ayres. [9]

Voodoo is the second studio album by the American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist D'Angelo, released on January 25, 2000, through Virgin Records. D'Angelo recorded the album during 1997 and 1999 at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, with an extensive line-up of musicians associated with the Soulquarians musical collective. Produced primarily by the singer, Voodoo features a loose, groove-based funk sound and serves as a departure from the more conventional song structure of his debut album, Brown Sugar (1995). Its lyrics explore themes of spirituality, love, sexuality, maturation, and fatherhood.

Tierra Umi Wilson, known mononymously as Umi, is an American singer and songwriter. Born in Seattle, Washington, she attended the University of Southern California, but dropped out in 2019 in order to pursue music. She is best known for her 2018 song "Remember Me", which has over 160 million streams on Spotify. She also accompanied Conan Gray as an opening act on his Comfort Crowd Tour in 2019. The same year, she released her second EP, Love Language. In 2020, she released the EP Introspection, along with a short film to accompany the project. THe following year, she released a remixed version of this EP titled Introspection Reimagined, which featured live, jazz and neo-soul inspired reworks of the tracks. In 2023, she released Wherever u r. a single in collaboration with Korean singer V of BTS. In January 2024, she released an EP titled Talking to the Wind. Later that year, she accompanied singer Jhene Aiko as an opening act on the Magic Hour Tour.
