Maciej Tadeusz Grabowski (born 2 March 1978 in Gdynia) is a Polish sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. [1] He had an impressive track record of two career European titles, and finished only in the top 16 in three editions of the Olympic Games (2000, 2004, and 2008), representing his nation Poland. [2] [3] Throughout his sporting career, Grabowski trained for Hestia Sopot Sailing Club (Polish : Sopocki Klub Żeglarski Hestia) and then became a member of the Polish Sailing Association under head coach Tomasz Chamera. [4] As of June 2015, Grabowski is ranked outside the top 200 for the Laser class by the International Sailing Federation.
Grabowski made his Olympic debut at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where he sailed a marvelous stretch to notch a seventh spot in the Laser class with a net grade of 86, but fell short of an Olympic medal chance by 22 points. [2] [5]
At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Grabowski finished the Laser regatta steadily from a poor start to take the eleventh place overall with 125 points, trailing behind Spain's Luis Martínez by a five-point shortfall. [6] [7]
Eight years after his Olympic debut, Grabowski qualified again for his third Polish squad, as a 30-year-old veteran, in the Laser class at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Although he performed poorly at the 2007 ISAF World Championships, Grabowski had secured a selection on the Polish team through the assistance of IOC's Olympic Solidarity scholarship. [2] [8] Unlike two of his previous Games, Grabowski failed to improve his Olympic feat with a surprising sixteen-place finish in a fleet of forty-three sailors at the end of ten-race series, giving him only a grade of 131. Michael Blackburn is an Australian Olympic medallist, sailor and coach. He is well known for his crossing of Bass Strait in a Laser dinghy. He did so on 9 March 2005 in a record time of 13 hours 1 minute.
Robert Scheidt is a Brazilian sailor who has won two gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze from five Olympic Games and a Star Sailors League Final. He is one of the most successful sailors at Olympic Games and one of the most successful Brazilian Olympic athletes, being one of only two to earn five medals along with fellow sailor Torben Grael, and only behind the six medals of Rebeca Andrade. He is the only Brazilian sailor to win medals in both dinghy and keelboat classes.
Fernando Echávarri Erasun is a professional yachtsman in the Olympic Tornado class. Teaming with crew Antón Paz Blanco, he became the Spanish, European, World Champion, ISAF Sailor of the year in 2005, Olympic gold medallist at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games held in Qingdao.
Tom Slingsby is an Australian competitive sailor. Slingsby's first successes came sailing Laser dinghies, where he won three consecutive world championships and the 2012 Olympic gold medal. Slingsby was the strategist for the America's Cup-winning Team Oracle USA in 2013. In 2016 he skippered the winner-of-line honours in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race line. Following this he skippered the Australian team in the inaugural SailGP competition.
Krystal Weir is an Australian sailor. She finished tenth at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympics in sailing in the Women's Laser Radial class event, where she finished in twelfth.
Allan Julie is a Laser sailor from the Seychelles. Julie is a five-time Olympian, and a gold medalist in the same sailing class at the 2011 All-Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.
Irina Emilova Konstantinova-Bontemps is a Bulgarian windsurfer, who specialized in Neil Pryde RS:X class. She represented Bulgaria in four editions of the Olympic Games, and has also placed outside the top ten in both Mistral and RS:X classes. In 2006, Konstantinova married French windsurfer, two-time world champion, and later 2008 Olympic silver medalist Julien Bontemps before she relocated to France, and trained for ASPTT Nantes. As of September 2013, Konstantinova is ranked no. 88 in the world for the sailboard class by the International Sailing Federation.
Tuula Tenkanen is a Finnish sailor, who specialized in one-person dinghy class. She represented her nation Finland at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Giedrius Gužys is a retired Lithuanian sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He represented his nation Lithuania in two editions of the Olympic Games, and has placed outside the top ten in his respective sailing class at the ISAF World Championships and ISAF World Cup series. Guzys also trained throughout his sporting career for Bangpūtys Sailing Regatta in Kaunas.
Karl Ossian Militz Suneson is a retired Swedish sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He obtained two medals in his respective category at the Laser World Championship, and also represented his nation Sweden in two editions of the Olympic Games. Suneson trained throughout most of his sporting career for the Royal Swedish Yacht Club in Saltsjöbaden under his personal coach and brother Wilhelm Suneson.
Roope Samuel Suomalainen is a retired Finnish sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He represented his nation Finland in two editions of the Olympic Games, and has also been training throughout most of his sporting career for Kotka Yacht Club in his native Kotka.
Gareth Blanckenberg is a retired South African sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He obtained top twenty finishes on his respective category in two editions of the Olympic Games, and has also been training throughout most of his sailing career for Imperial Yacht Club in Cape Town, under his Irish-born personal coach Trevor Millar.
Luis Martínez Doreste is a retired Spanish sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He placed fourth in his respective category at the 2003 ISAF Sailing World Championships in Cádiz, and also obtained top eleven finishes in two editions of the Olympic Games. Throughout his sporting career, Martinez trained full-time for the Royal Gran Canaria YC in his native Las Palmas under his personal coach Antón Garrote. Coming from a sailing pedigree, Martinez also competed with his brother and 470 sailor Gustavo Martínez Doreste in two Olympics.
Kemal Muslubaş is a retired Turkish sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. Muslubas represented his nation Turkey in two editions of the Olympic Games, became a two-time national champion in the Laser class at the Turkish Championships, and also earned a silver medal at the 2005 Summer Universiade in his native Istanbul.
Kevin Lim Leong Keat is a Malaysian former sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He bagged two silver medals at the Asian Games and became the first-ever Malaysian athlete in history to compete in four editions of the Summer Olympic Games. Before retiring from the sport in late 2008, Lim trained most of his career at the Woollahra Sailing Club in Sydney, Australia.
Anders Nyholm-Pedersen is a Danish former sailor, who specialized in the Laser class. He bagged won a silver medal in the Laser Radial class at the 2000 ISAF Youth World Championships in Çeşme, Turkey and later represented his native country Denmark in two editions of the Olympic Games.
Joseph Koh Seng Leong is a Singaporean former sailor, who specialized in the Laser and 470 classes. He represented Singapore across two editions of the Summer Olympic Games, finishing outside the top twenty-five each in two separate boats, respectively. Outside Olympic career, Koh collected a total of two medals in a continental regatta, spanning the 2006 Asian Games in Doha and the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima. Koh trained throughout his sporting career at SAF Yachting Club in Changi, under the tutelage of his personal coach Brett Beyer, a six-time Laser Apprentice Master world champion from Australia.
Katarzyna Szotyńska, also known as Katarzyna Deberny, is a Polish former sailor who specialized in the Laser Radial class. She represented her country Poland at the 2008 Summer Olympics and came closest to the medal haul in the final race of her signature fleet, finishing in ninth place. Outside her Olympic career, Szotyńska collected a total of five gold medals in a major international regatta, spanning four editions of the World Championships and the 2005 Summer Universiade in İzmir, Turkey. A senior member of the sailing roster at the University of Warsaw's sport academy, Szotyńska trained most of her competitive sporting career under the tutelage of her personal coach and brother Bartłomiej.
Eftychia "Efi" Mantzaraki is a Greek former sailor, who specialized in the Yngling and Laser Radial classes. She represented the host nation Greece in the three-woman keelboat at the 2004 Summer Olympics, before switching to a single-handed boat on her second trip to Beijing 2008. Mantzaraki trained full-time under her personal coach Christos Chionas, while sailing competitively for Katoikon Vouliagmeni.
Gašper Vinčec is a Slovenian former sailor, who specialized in the Finn class. He represented his country Slovenia in two editions of the Summer Olympic Games and came closest to the medal haul in the final race of his signature fleet, finishing in seventh place. Outside his Olympic career, Vinčec picked up a bronze at the 2007 ISAF Worlds in Cascais, Portugal, becoming the first Slovenian sailor to ascend the podium since the breakup of SFR Yugoslavia. A member of the country's Finn yacht club, Vinčec trained most of his competitive sporting career under the tutelage of his personal coach Roman Teply.
