Maggi Eleanor Dawn (born 1959) [1] is a British musician, author, theologian and Anglican priest. She was Principal of St Mary's College at the University of Durham, [2] and remains a professor in the Department of Theology and Religion. Previously she was associate professor of Theology and Literature and Associate Dean of Marquand Chapel at Yale Divinity School. [3] [4] [5]
Dawn's first career was as a singer-songwriter. She has recorded five albums of her own songs, with her album Elements (1996) exploring 'biblical images of God'. [5] She is an advocate for new music in church settings, and she taught a course, "Songwriting for Congregations", which "reject[ed] the idea that contemporary and traditional music are discrete genres". [6]
Dawn took up the study of theology after a successful career as a singer-songwriter. From 1993 to 1996, she read theology and religious studies at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and trained for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge: [7] [8] she graduated with a first class honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and a certificate in theology for ministry (CTM). [7] As per tradition, her BA was later promoted to a Master of Arts (MA Cantab) degree. [9] She later recounted how she was given a leaflet on her first day of theological college that said "A woman’s place is not at the altar but in the kitchen; put on an apron and get back to where you belong". [10] From 1996 to 1999, she was a doctoral student in the theology of Samuel Taylor Coleridge at Selwyn College, Cambridge: [7] [11] her PhD was awarded in 2002 for a doctoral thesis titled "Confessions of an inquiring spirit: a study of the relationship between form and content in the written theology of S.T. Coleridge". [12]
Dawn was ordained in the Church of England as a deacon in July 1999 and as a priest in July 2000. [1] [7] She served her curacy in the Diocese of Ely from 1999 to 2001. [9] In 2001, she returned to the University of Cambridge as a chaplain at King's College, Cambridge. [9] Serving under the dean, she organised and led services in King's College Chapel including the Nine Lessons and Carols, provided pastoral support, and taught modern theology. [7] In 2003, she moved to Robinson College, Cambridge where she had been appointed its only chaplain and elected a fellow. [9] In addition to her college work, she was a supervisor and occasional lecturer in the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge. [7]
In 2011, Dawn moved to the United States where she joined Yale University as associate dean of Yale Divinity School's Marquand Chapel and an associate professor of theology and literature. [9] After eight years, she was not awarded a full professorship and so looked elsewhere. [8] In July 2019, it was announced that she would be the next principal of St Mary's College, Durham. [13] She took up the post in September 2019, and was also made a professor in the University of Durham's Department of Theology and Religion. [14] She has also held permission to officiate in the Diocese of Durham since 2021. [9]
She is the author of five books and numerous articles, on topics including biblical interpretation and the relationship between theology and the arts. Her 2013 book, Like the Wideness of the Sea, on arguments for the consecration of women as bishops, was cited in a debate in the UK parliament on the subject. [10] She has been described as a post-evangelical. [1]
Dawn has written articles for The Guardian , [15] The Christian Century , [16] and the Bible Reading Fellowship, and has appeared on BBC religion programs including Prayer for the Day . [17]
Dawn married the Dean of Durham, Andrew Tremlett, in April 2022. [18] She was previously married to Andy Cross. [1]

John Charlton Polkinghorne was an English theoretical physicist, theologian, and Anglican priest. A prominent and leading voice explaining the relationship between science and religion, he was professor of mathematical physics at the University of Cambridge from 1968 to 1979, when he resigned his chair to study for the priesthood, becoming an ordained Anglican priest in 1982. He served as the president of Queens' College, Cambridge, from 1988 until 1996.
The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) is a consortium of eight private independent American theological schools and eleven centers and affiliates. Seven of the theological schools are located in Berkeley, California. The GTU was founded in 1962 and their students can take courses at the University of California, Berkeley. Additionally, some of the GTU consortial schools are part of other California universities such as Santa Clara University and California Lutheran University. Most of the GTU consortial schools are located in Berkeley area with the majority north of the campus in a neighborhood known as "Holy Hill" due to the cluster of GTU seminaries and centers located there.
The Divinity School at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, is one of ten graduate or professional schools within Duke University. It is also one of thirteen seminaries founded and supported by the United Methodist Church. It has 39 regular rank faculty and 15 joint, secondary or adjunct faculty, and, as of 2017, an enrollment of 543 full-time equivalent students. The current dean of the Divinity School is the Rev. Harold William Attridge is an American New Testament scholar and historian of Christianity known for his work in New Testament exegesis, especially the Epistle to the Hebrews, the study of Hellenistic Judaism, and the history of early Christianity. He is a Sterling Professor of Divinity at Yale University, where he served as Dean of the Divinity School from 2002 to 2012, the first Roman Catholic to head that historically Protestant school.
Stephen Whitefield Sykes was a Church of England bishop and academic specialising in divinity. He was Van Mildert Professor of Divinity at Durham University from 1974 to 1985, and Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University from 1985 to 1990. Between from 1990 and 1999, he served as the Bishop of Ely, the diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Ely. He was the Principal of St John's College, Durham from 1999 to 2006. He served as an Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Durham during his time as head of St John's College and in retirement.
Berkeley Divinity School, founded in 1854, is a seminary of The Episcopal Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Along with Andover Newton Theological School and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Berkeley is one of the three "Partners on the Quad," which compose a part of the Yale Divinity School at Yale University. Thus, Berkeley operates as a denominational seminary within an ecumenical divinity school. Berkeley has historically represented a Broad church orientation among Anglican seminaries in the country, and was the fourth independent seminary to be founded, after General Theological Seminary (1817), Virginia Theological Seminary (1823), and Nashotah House (1842). Berkeley's institutional antecedents began at Trinity College, Hartford in 1849. The institution was formally chartered in Middletown, Connecticut in 1854, moved to New Haven in 1928, and amalgamated with Yale in 1971.
George Pattison is a retired English theologian and Anglican priest. His last post prior to retirement was as Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow. He was previously Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford. From 2017-2019 he was a Senior Co-Fund Fellow at the Max Weber Center at the University of Erfurt. Letty Mandeville Russell was a feminist theologian, professor, and prolific author. She was a member of the first class of women admitted to Harvard Divinity School, and one of the first women ordained in the United Presbyterian Church. After earning a doctorate in theology at Union Theological Seminary, she joined the faculty at Yale Divinity School, where she taught for 28 years.
Andrew Brian McGowan is an Australian scholar of early Christianity and an Anglican priest. He is McFaddin Professor of Anglican Studies at Yale Divinity School and dean and president of the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale.
Carol Harrison is a British theologian and ecclesiastical historian, specialising in Augustine of Hippo. Since January 2015, she has been Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford; she is the first woman and first lay person to hold this appointment. She is a fellow of Christ Church, Oxford and an honorary fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. On 27 April 2015, she was installed as a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. She was previously Professor of the History and Theology of the Latin West at Durham University.
Andrew Tremlett is a British Church of England priest. Since 2022, he has served as Dean of St Paul's, and is therefore the head of the Chapter of St Paul's Cathedral and the most senior priest in the Diocese of London. Previously, he was a canon residentiary of Bristol Cathedral (2008–2010), a canon residentiary of Westminster Abbey (2010–2016) and Dean of Durham (2016–2022).
Joanne Caladine Bailey Wells is a British Anglican bishop, theologian, and academic. Since January 2023, she has served at the Anglican Communion Office in London as "Bishop for Episcopal Ministry". Previously, she was a lecturer in the Old Testament and biblical theology at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and then associate professor of Bible and Ministry at Duke Divinity School, Duke University, North Carolina; From 2013 until 2016, she had served as Chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury; she was then Bishop of Dorking, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Guildford, 2016–2023.
Emilie Maureen Townes is an American Christian social ethicist and theologian. She is currently Dean and E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Townes was the first African-American woman to be elected president of the American Academy of Religion in 2008 and served as president of the Society for the Study of Black Religion from 2012–2016.
