The Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference was formed by several schools in the Trumbull and Mahoning County area in the 2017-18 school year after the Inter-Tri County Conference disbanded. [2]
In 2020, the remaining members of the Blue Tier Schools of the All-American Conference joined to create the Gray Tier of the MVAC. [3] Garrettsville Garfield would also be joining the former AAC schools, however it wouldn't participate in conference play until the 2021-22 school year due to a scheduling commitment they had with their former conference, the Portage Trail Conference. [4]
In 2022, Sebring McKinley announced their departure from the conference as a football member team and announced they'd be joining the Northern 8 Football Conference, after struggling with roster numbers for several seasons, but would remain a part of the conference for the other sports. [5]
In 2023, Southeast High School announced they would be leaving the Portage Trail Conference and join the Grey Tier of the MVAC. Campbell High School would be moved to the Scarlet Tier. [6]
In 2026, Waterloo, Garfield and Southeasts Board of Education voted to leave the MVAC in favor of the newly former Greater Portage Conference, which is set to begin conference play in the 2027-28 school year. [7]
