Maite Delteil (born 1933 in Furnel, France) [1] is a French painter exhibiting predominantly in India. [2]

Biography

Maite Delteil was brought up in the French countryside and educated at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts, Academie de la Grand Chaumiere and the Académie Julian. [2] Delteil then received a fellowship from the French government and Institut de France to study in Spain and Greece. In 1959, she received the Prix De la Casa Velasquez. [1] Following her marriage to Kolkota-born painter Sakti Burman she was introduced to India and its culture. Her first solo exhibition took place in Kolkota in 1964 and, since 2001, Delteil has exhibited exclusively in India. [3]

Delteil's work has been described as creating an "idyllscape" of "everyday scenes". [4] Her exhibition Enchanted at Art Musings Gallery, Colaba, Mumbai in January 2013 consisted of intricate colourful paintings of "perfectly round trees, serene-looking people and pretty birds" [3] which conveyed "the meaning of life without being morbid or dark". [5]

Delteil has had exhibitions in several other countries, including France, U.S. and Japan. Her works are in several public and private collections of these countries. [1]

A book about Delteil, her life and work was due to be published in 2013. [5] [6]

Personal life

Delteil married Indian painter Sakti Burman in 1963. [3] Her daughter is award-winning painter Maya Burman. Besides her husband and daughter, her extended family includes eminent artists: Jayasri Burman, her husband's niece and Jayasri's husband Paresh Maity. Delteil spends half the year living in Paris and the other half in India. [3]

Mariette Lydis (1887–1970) was an Austrian-Argentine painter. Lydis was born in Vienna, Austria on August 24, 1887, under the name Marietta Ronsperger. She was the third child of Jewish merchants, Franz Ronsperger and Eugenia Fischer, and the sister of Richard and Edith Ronsperger, creator of Opera books who later died by suicide. Mariette first married Julius Koloman Pachoffer-Karñy in 1910. She eventually divorced Julius and married Jean Lydis in 1918 to whom she remained married until 1925. In 1928 she married Giuseppe Govone, an art publisher, and formally remained married to him until his death in 1948. However, at the end of the 30s she escaped Paris and the ensuing Nazi roundup of Jews to be briefly in England and from 1940 in Argentina. From 1940 until her death in 1970 she lived in Argentina, with her partner Erica Marx. Lydis lived openly as bisexual. She is best known for her book illustrations and paintings. Mariette died on April 26, 1970, and rests in the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires.
