Manchester United Methodist Church (formerly Manchester Methodist Episcopal Church, abbreviated Manchester UMC) is a United Methodist church in Manchester, Missouri. It was the first church to be established in the western part of St. Louis County and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.^[2] The church is among the largest United Methodist congregations in Missouri, with over 2,700 members.^[3] In 2019, Manchester UMC reported a weekly attendance of 1,069^[4]

History

Before the church building was built, the area had been a preaching place of the St. Louis Circuit. However, it is unknown when the first Methodist services were held. In 1844, the Methodist Church split and the St. Louis Circuit joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Construction for the chapel started in 1856, and in 1859, Sunday School classes were held in its basement until it officially opened later that year, with a total building cost of $6,389.00. An educational building and offices were added in 1965, both located west of the chapel. The educational building, designed by St. Louis architect Lester Black, is two stories and contains twelve rooms. The church office building is also two stories. In 1968, construction for a new sanctuary began. The Contemporary Colonial style building was designed by P. J. Hoener and Associates. Just north of the church buildings is a cemetery belonging to the church. The original Greek Revival chapel was a brick building over a limestone foundation. It originally had two separate entrances, one for men and the other for women.^[2] In 1984, the newer sanctuary was enlarged and the educational building was renovated. The sanctuary was again updated in 1993. In 1997, construction for a new, larger sanctuary began designed by Gale A. Hill & Associates (Kouba+Knoop Associates), and it opened in 1998.^[5] The church's first official pastor was Wesley Browning. During the American Civil War, the church held regular services with regular ministers, which was uncommon in Missouri during the war.^[2]

In 1983, abnormally high levels of dioxin were discovered in the soil around the church's southern side.^[6] The church began holding an annual Fair Trade Market in 2003, the largest fair trade shopping event in the United States.^[7] The project was founded by Kellee Sikes, Plowsharing Crafts and the Justice Advocates of Manchester United Methodist Church.^[8] In 2015 the pipe organ in the sanctuary was rebuilt and enlarged by R.A. Colby of Johnson City, TN. The organ contains the only moveable five manual console in the state of Missouri and it is the largest hybrid (pipe/digital) organ in this part of the country.

Although well known for many years in the organ building industry, they achieved wider notability in 2004 with the refurbishment of the Royal Albert Hall's Father Willis Grand Organ. That company filed for insolvency in 2020 with their trading name and intellectual rights being bought out by the Canterbury firm F. H Browne and Sons.

The first instruments were built in 1893 with the Austin Patent Airchest, and many remain in fine playing condition to this day.

St. Paul United Methodist Church is located in the historic Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. For a time in the early 1900s, St. Paul had the largest Methodist congregation in the Southeastern United States. The church organ was acquired at the Cotton States Exhibition in 1887. St. Paul's stained glass windows, which date back to 1907, are being refurbished. St. Paul is a main stop on tours of the Grant Park neighborhood given by the Atlanta Preservation Center. St. Paul is also home to the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool. The Candlelight Tour of Homes begins at St. Paul.

The Metropolitan United Methodist Church is a church located at 8000 Woodward Avenue in the New Center area of Detroit, Michigan. It was completed in 1926, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1986. This church should not be confused with Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Washington, DC, which is often regarded as a National Church within the United States as it was specifically established by the General Conference to be a "representative presence of Methodism in the nation's capital".

Quinn Chapel AME Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal Church building located at 227 Bowen Street in the Carondelet section of St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States. Built in 1869 as the North Public Market, it was acquired by the church in 1880. On October 16, 1974, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Its current pastor is Rev. Lori K. Beason.

Roosevelt Organ Works was an American manufacturer of pipe organs. It was founded by Hilborne Roosevelt (1849–1886) and his younger brother, Frank Roosevelt (1862–1895), in 1872. It operated in New York City, with branches in Baltimore and Philadelphia. The brothers built some of the largest organs in the United States during their career, and many today are still prized for their quality and tone. The company was in operation until 1893.

The Soul Harvest Ministries is located at 16300 Woodward Avenue in Highland Park, Michigan. It was built in 1916 as the First United Methodist Church and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Missouri United Methodist Church is a United Methodist church in downtown Columbia, Missouri. Its congregation formed the first Methodist Church in Columbia in 1837. The present building on 9th Street built between 1925 and 1930 is constructed out of Indiana Bedford limestone in a Late Gothic Revival style. The Stained Glass windows, including the large History of Methodism window at the rear of the sanctuary, are some of the most detailed in Mid-Missouri. The sanctuary seats 1,000 people. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

West Market Street United Methodist Church(WMSUMC) is one of the oldest churches in Greensboro, North Carolina, and is over 190 years old; WMSUMC is located in downtown Greensboro across from the courthouse. It is a relatively large church with approximately 1700 members, though not all are active. The current sanctuary was constructed between 1893 and 1898; it was the third sanctuary built by the congregation. Today, the church has expanded, with a larger educational complex adjacent to the sanctuary, and other properties, including an Early Childhood Center, held at nearby. The Senior Pastor is the Reverend Beth Crissman, with Associate Pastor the Reverend Jeremy Benton.

The Antioch Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri is a church long important in the black community of the Ville neighborhood of North St. Louis. It is located in a Gothic Revival-style brick building at 4213 N. Market St. which was built in 1921. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

The Cathedral Church of St. Peter is an Episcopal cathedral in St. Petersburg, Florida, United States. It is the seat of the Diocese of Southwest Florida. In 2004 it was included as a contributing property in the Downtown St. Petersburg Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pharr Chapel United Methodist Church was established in 1878 in Morgan City, LA, through donations made by the Pharr family.

Roberts Park Methodist Episcopal Church, whose present-day name is Roberts Park United Methodist Church, was dedicated on August 27, 1876, making it one of the oldest church remaining in downtown Indianapolis. Diedrich A. Bohlen, a German-born architect who immigrated to Indianapolis in the 1850s, designed this early example of Romanesque Revival architecture. The church is considered one of Bohlen's major works. Constructed of Indiana limestone at Delaware and Vermont Streets, it has a rectangular plan and includes a bell tower on the southwest corner. The church is known for its interior woodwork, especially a pair of black-walnut staircases leading to galleries (balconies) surrounding the interior of three sides of its large sanctuary. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 19, 1982. It is home to one of several Homeless Jesus statues around the world, this one located behind the church on Alabama Street.

Trinity-St. James United Methodist Church is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. The congregation began as a Sunday school in the northwest part of the city organized by Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. The evangelist Billy Sunday had preached a revival there and over 300 people joined the church. St. James Methodist Episcopal Church, as it was then known, was established shortly afterward in February 1910. The congregation originally used the closed Danish Lutheran Church at K Avenue NW and Fourth Street NW for their services, and they moved the building that summer to Ellis Boulevard NW. St. James grew to the point that a new building was needed. In 1945 property across the street was purchased, and local architect William J. Brown designed the new church facility. Construction began in September 1952 and it was completed in April 1954 for $165,000.
