Manjakkudi is a village on the banks of Kaveri river in Tiruvarur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It comes under the Kudavasal Taluk. [1]

Education

Manjakkudi is the educational hub of the entire district of Tiruvarur. It is one of the few villages in India where education facilities from kindergarten to a Masters program, including M. Phil, are provided.

Rural BPO

WIPRO BPO, the Business Process Outsourcing arm of Wipro Technologies, are creating a centre at Manjakkudi. More than 50 employees working in Wipro. [2]

Rice varieties

In 2013 Sheela Balaji organised a festival here dedicated to grains. The annual festival has attracted farmers and it has led to the replanting of old rice varieties. [3] Balaji was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar for her work preserving and growing rare rice varieties. The rice is sold in Chennai using a map of Manjakkudi is the logo. [4]

Nari Shakti Puraskar Highest civilian honour for women in India

Nari Shakti Puraskar is an annual award given by the Ministry of Women and Child Development of the Government of India to individual women or to institutions that work towards the cause of women empowerment. The awards are presented by the President of India on International Women's Day, at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The awards were instituted in 1999 under the title of Stree Shakti Puraskar and were renamed and reorganised in 2015. There are given in six institutional and two individual categories, which carry a cash prize of rupees two-lakh and one-lakh, respectively.

Purnima Devi Barman is a wildlife biologist from Assam, India. She is known for her conservation work with the greater adjutant stork, known locally as the Hargila. She is the founder of the Hargila Army, an all-female conservation initiative. In 2017, Barman was the recipient of both the Whitley Award for her conservation efforts and the Nari Shakti Puraskar, the highest civilian award for women, presented by the President of India.

Urmila Balavant Apte is the Indian Founder of the BhartiyaStree Shakti organisation in 1988 which is dedicated to the empowerment of women. She received the Nari Shakti Puraskar from President Ram Nath Kovind in 2018 for her work.

Sheela Balaji

Sheela Balaji leads the Indian educational nonprofit organization (NGO) AIM For Seva. She is known for preserving rice varieties. She started with four varieties and now has thirty. She has been awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar for her work and leads one of the largest organisations offering free education in India. She hails from the powerful family behind the TVS group and is the grand-daughter of TV Sundaram Iyengar.

Kalyani Pramod Balakrishnan is an Indian textile designer based in Chennai in Tamil Nadu. She has worked with weavers through the Ministry of Rural Development. She received the 2016 Nari Shakti Puraskar.

Madhu Jain is an Indian textile designer who is an advocate for bamboo fabric which she sees as the "textile of the future". In 2018 she was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar after 30 years in fashion.

Syamala Kumari Indian temple painter

K. Syamalakumari aka Syamala Kumari is an Indian temple painter. This was an occupation traditionally carried out by men. Her work includes painting at the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala. She has been awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar.

Anatta Sonney is an Indian scientist and the recipient of the Nari Shakti Puraskar prize, an annual prize and the highest award for women in India. Sonney was honored with the award by President Pranab Mukherjee in 2016 along with two other women scientists from ISRO Satellite Centre in Balgalore, India, Subha Varier and B. Codananyaguy.

Beti Zindabad Bakery Award winning bakery helping survivors of trafficking

Anuradha Krishnamoorthy is an Indian social entrepreneur and cheesemaker. She won the 2017 Nari Shakti Puraskar with her colleague Namrata Sundaresan.

Krishna Yadav Indian entrepreneur

Krishna Yadav is an Indian entrepreneur. She is known for her successful pickle business venture, which she started after receiving training from Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Delhi. Over several years she sold pickles at the roadside and gradually turned her venture into four different entities with a turnover of 40 million INR. She was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2016.

Millet Network of India

The Millet Network of India supports millet farmers. It was created by one hundred women who realised the qualities of the traditional crop. The group have helped village farmers to grow millet with low water usage and organic fertiliser while highlighting the injustice of government subsidies which encourage competitor crops like rice. It has received both the Nari Shakti Puraskar and the Equator Award.

Ringyuichon Vashum is an Indian activist for microcredit in Ukhrul District in the state of Manipur. She facilitates the formation of women's self-help groups. She was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar for her work in 2017.

Reema Sathe is an Indian Chemical Engineer and activist. She created a snack company that shares its profits more fairly with small farmers. She was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar for her work in 2017.
