Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988, which it was created from the former Amansie District Council. On 15 March 2018, the southern part of the district was split off to create Amansie South District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Amansie West District. The district assembly is located in the southern part of Ashanti Region and has Manso Nkwanta as its capital town.

Damongo was declared the capital of the new Savannah Region. It is located in the north of the country. The Savannah Region is divided into 7 districts; Bole, Central Gonja, North Gonja, East Gonja, Sawla/Tuna/Kalba, West Gonja, North East Gonja and 7 Constituencies; Bole/Bamboi, Damongo, Daboya/Mankarigu, Salaga North, Salaga South, Sawla/Tuna/Kalba and Yapei/Kusawgu. In 2017, a GHȼ350,000.00 air-conditioned washroom facility was awarded to improve sanitation in the town. Datano is the most populous, and industrious town with the highest number of people in the Amansie South District.
Antoakrom, also known as Antoakurom and Antobiakrom, is a small town in Manso in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The town is located 12 miles southeast of the district capital Manso Nkwanta, and it is situated at the junction of two roads that link it to Bekwai to the east and Kumasi to the north.
Bolgatanga Senior High School is a public co-educational Senior High School located in Winkongo, a town about 8km south of Bolgatanga, the Upper East regional capital. in actual fact, the school is within the Talensi-Nabdam District.
