Mantar Gowda (born 1985) is an Indian politician from Karnataka. He is an MLA from Madikeri Assembly constituency in Kodagu district. He represents Indian National Congress Party and won the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election. [1] [2] [3]

Early life and education

Gowda is from Arakalgud, Hassan district. He is the son of A. Manju, the JD (S) candidate who won from Arkalgud Assembly seat in Hassan. [4] He is the grandson of Sakamma, a philanthropist from Somwarpet. He resides in his ancestral home in Somwarpet. He married Divya, daughter of Narain, alias Madeyanda Narendra and Yashoda Bopanna, who served as Director of Karnataka SSLC Board. He completed his M.D. in radiology. [5] [6]

Career

Gowda won the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election from Madikeri Assembly constituency representing Indian National Congress. He polled 84,879 votes and defeated his nearest rival and five time MLA, Appachu Ranjan of Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 4,413 votes. [7] [8] He lost the election for legislative council from local bodies in 2021 on Congress ticket. [9]

When the United Front, a coalition of regional parties, formed the central government with the support of the Congress, Deve Gowda was unexpectedly chosen to head the government after V. P. Singh and Jyoti Basu declined the post and he was elected Prime Minister. During his tenure as prime minister, he also served as Home Minister for some time. His prime ministerial tenure lasted for less than a year. After his prime ministerial tenure, he was elected to the 12th (1998), 14th (2004), 15th, and 16th Lok Sabha, as Member of Parliament for the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency. He lost Lok Sabha elections in 2019 from Tumkuru but has been elected to Rajya Sabha since.

Siddaramaiah, also referred to by his nickname Siddu, is an Indian politician who is serving as the 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka from 20 May 2023. He also held that position previously from 2013 to 2018, being only the second person to hold that office for a full five-year term. He belongs to the Indian National Congress and is presently the leader of the Congress Legislative Party. He represented the Varuna Assembly constituency from 2023, previously from 2008 to 2018, Badami Assembly constituency from 2018 to 2023, and from Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency from 2004 to 2007, 1994 to 1999 and from 1983 to 1989 in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The town of Virajpet also spelled as Virajapete is town of the district of Kodagu, in India's southern State of Karnataka. It is the main town of the Virajpet taluka, south of the district, and borders Kerala State. The name of the town is derived from its founder, Dodda Vira Rajendra.

Jagadish Shivappa Shettar is an Indian politician, who served as the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 2012 to 2013. He is currently serving as Member of Karnataka Legislative Council. He has subsequently served as Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly during 2008–2009. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier in 2023 he had joined the Indian National Congress, where he quit the BJP on being denied the MLA ticket in 2023. He represented Hubli-Dharwad Central Vidhan Sabha seat, which he resigned in 2023 before the elections. Meriyanda Chengappa Nanaiah is an Indian politician and lawyer from the State of Karnataka. He held as multiple portfolios during his career including the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs as part of Deve Gowda ministry between 1994 and 1996. Nanaiah has been politically active for over 30 years. He is five-time member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, and served once as the leader of the opposition in the Council. A book titled Nenapugalu Maasuva Munna (2005) has also been published by a journalist on Nanaiah's life.
