Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya (MGS) is a public library located in Thane, Maharashtra, India. It was founded on 1 June 1893. [1] [2] It is one of the oldest Marathi libraries in India. [3]
Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya was established on 1 June 1893, by Vinayak Laxman Bhave, a 22-year-old man, along with his friends Vishnu Bhaskar and Baba Patwardhan. It was the first public Marathi library in Thane district. On the day of its establishment, the library received 40 subscribers, and by the end of the year, the number of subscribers had gone up to 172. The library started with 76 books and had 598 books by the end of the year. [1]
The library had run a magazine called Maharashtra Kavi from 1904 to 1908 under the editorship of Vinayak Laxman Bhave. The magazine published works of many poets from the 13th century to the 18th century. In 1944, the golden jubilee of the organization was celebrated under the chairmanship of Narasimha Chintaman Kelkar, alias Tatyasaheb Kelkar. On 8 February 1953, the 13th Literary Week of Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya was inaugurated by freedom activist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The 42nd Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan was held in Thane in 1960 as an initiative of Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya. [1] In 2014, the mobile book library was started by Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya. [4] In June 2017, on its 120th anniversary, it installed a digital kiosk, which offers books in digital and audio formats. [5]
The first building of Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya was constructed in 1930 in Kharkar Ali, Thane. The new library building was inaugurated on 21 April 1964, by the then Defense Minister of India, Yashwantrao Chavan and Datto Vaman Potdar. At the same time, the organization got the status of a district library. [1]
Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya has more than 1,700 books. It has a collection of old magazines, including Kerala Kokil, Kayastha Mitra, Paisa Fund, Dharmajagruti, Kirloskar, and Anand. A project of digitization has also been started to make the bibliography accessible to more readers digitally. [1]
It had 3,000 to 4,000 members before COVID-19. The membership decreased after COVID-19. [6] The membership of Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya is ₹1,000 per month since April 2018. [4]
In the triennial election of Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya, Vidyadhar Thanekar, a writer and publisher won as the president in September 2021. [7]
Marathi Cinema, also known as Marathi film industry, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Marathi language widely spoken in the state of Maharashtra. It is based in Mumbai. It is the oldest film industry of India and one of the leaders in filmmaking in the Indian film industry.

Vishnudas Bhave was the leading dramatist of Maharashtra, India and considered as pioneer of Marathi theatre. He was born in Sangli and he staged the first Marathi-language play Sita Swayamvar in Sangli in 1843. In this venture, Bhave was supported by the then king of the princely state of Sangli. After the success of the play Sita Swayamvar, Bhave staged plays on various other episodes of the Ramayana. He traveled with his troupes for the plays. He also ventured into puppet shows. Bhave died on 9 August 1901.

Narasimha Chintaman Kelkar, popularly known as Sahityasamrat Tatyasaheb Kelkar, was a lawyer from Miraj as well as a dramatist, novelist, short story writer, poet, biographer, critic, historian, writer on philosophical and political themes. He was born in Chitpavan Brahmin family. He was a literary and political figure in Maharashtra, India, and also both editor and trustee of the newspaper Kesari. He served as editor twice when Tilak was imprisoned in 1897 and 1908.

The Mumbai Marathi Grantha Sangrahalaya (MMGS) is a public library in Mumbai, India. It is one of India's oldest libraries, founded in 1898. It has a collection of more than 645,569 Marathi books, some of which are rare and over 200 years old. The library was used by various notable personalities and Marathi scholars, including Bal Gangadhar Tilak and B. R. Ambedkar. It was declared as a special museum by the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education (Maharashtra) in 2019.

It stars Subodh Bhave as Shivaji I and Sharad Kelkar as Baji Prabhu Deshpande in lead while Amruta Khanvilkar, Nishigandha Wad, Sayali Sanjeev, Hardeek Joshi, Milind Shinde, Kishore Kadam, Nitish Chavan and Ashok Shinde plays important supporting roles. The film is about the inspiring story of Baji Prabhu Deshpande, a general of Shivaji I who, along with his army of 300 soldiers, fought against 12,000 Bijapuri soldiers. The film was released theatrically on 25 October 2022 and digitally in Hindi on 8 December 2022 on ZEE5.

Vaalvi is a 2023 Indian Marathi-language dark comedy thriller film directed by Paresh Mokashi and produced by Madhugandha Kulkarni under the production banner of Zee Studios. The film stars Swapnil Joshi, Anita Date Kelkar, Subodh Bhave and Shivani Surve and was released theatrically on 13 January 2023 and digitally on ZEE5 on 24 February 2023. In the film, Aniket (Joshi) plans to murder his mentally unstable wife, Avani, by faking a double suicide along with his girlfriend, Devika (Surve), but unforeseen circumstances compel them to team up with a psychiatrist, Anshuman (Bhave).
