The March 1888 Merthyr Tydfil by-election was a parliamentary by-election held for the House of Commons constituency of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales on 14 March 1888.
The by-election was caused by the resignation of the sitting Liberal MP, Charles James who was appointed the Steward of the Manor of Northstead.
The only candidate nominated was industrialist David Alfred Thomas. [1]
The Liberal Party held the constituency unopposed.

Henry Austin Bruce, 1st Baron Aberdare, was a British Liberal Party politician, who served in government most notably as Home Secretary (1868–1873) and as Lord President of the Council.
David Alfred Thomas, 1st Viscount Rhondda, PC, was a Welsh industrialist and Liberal politician. He was UK Member of Parliament (MP) for Merthyr Tydfil from 1888 until the January 1910 general election, then MP for Cardiff until the December 1910 general election, when he left politics to concentrate on his business interests. He was made a member of the Privy Council in 1916. He later held office, notably as "Food Controller" in Lloyd George's wartime coalition government.
