On 8 March 2022, bandit gangs carried out two mass shootings in Kebbi State, northwest Nigeria, killing over 80 people.
The Nigerian bandit conflict began in 2011. It takes place in northwest Nigeria, between armed gangs and the government, who after a decade designated the gangs terrorist groups. The VNSA gangs often carry out attacks against the government and civilians, including mass shootings and mass kidnappings. The gangs' most deadly attack was the 2022 Zamfara massacres. Their attacks in Kebbi State have included a massacre and a mass kidnapping, both in June 2021, as well as a massacre in January 2022.
On 8 March 2022 in Sabaka, bandits ambushed and killed at least 62 members of volunteer vigilante group Yan Sa Kai in Kebbi. [1] [2]
At around 4:30pm on the same day, a horde of bandits entered a riverside settlement near Kanya, Wasagu/Danko. They left their motorcycles behind and surrounded Kanya. The attackers entered Kanya and ambushed the deputy governor's convoy, killing thirteen soldiers, five policemen and a vigilante. [3] Eight other people were wounded. [2]

The Zamfara kidnapping was the abduction of 279 female students aged between 10 and 17 during a raid by armed bandits on 26 February 2021. The kidnapping occurred at the Government Girls Science Secondary School, a boarding school in Jangebe, in Zamfara State, Nigeria. All hostages were released by the bandits on 2 March 2021, though claims vary as to the negotiation methods used by the Nigerian government in order to facilitate their release.
On 3 June 2021, an armed group attacked eight villages in Kebbi State, northwestern Nigeria, killing at least 90 people. The attack began at 3pm; the bandits, who rode motorcycles, attacked Koro, Kimpi, Gaya, Dimi, Zutu, Rafin Gora and Iguenge villages. The gunmen, from neighbouring Nigerian states Niger and Zamfara, also stole cattle and destroyed crops.
