Marcus Chamat (Swedish pronunciation:  [ˈmǎrːkɵs ɧaˈmatː] ; born 6 May 1975), is a Swedish professional eight-ball and nine-ball pool player. He was nicknamed "Napoleon" due to his personality and standing at 5 ft 4 in (1.63 m) tall. He is a two time European Pool Championships winner, and one of the most successful players on the Euro Tour, winning four events, and finishing runner-up on twice. Chamat reached the semi-finals of the 2004 WPA World Nine-ball and the 2008 WPA World Eight-ball Championships, but did not reach the final of a world championship event.

He first represented Europe at the Mosconi Cup in 2000, and played for the Continent six times. After retiring in 2015, he became the non-playing captain of the side, winning the event in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Career

In 2000, Chamat won his first major title by defeating Ralf Souquet in the final of the nine-ball event at the European Pool Championships. [1] [2] He won at the European championships again, this time in the eight-ball event in 2008, defeating Svilar Zoren in the final 8–3. [2] [3] Chamat has also been runner-up at the championships on two further occasions, being defeated in the final of the eight-ball in 2010, and the nine-ball in 2012. [4]

Chamat reached the semi-finals of a world championships for the first time in 2004 at the 2004 WPA World Nine-ball Championship. After the preliminary round, Chamat defeated Souquet, Ramil Gallego (both 9–6), Thorsten Schober (11–8), and Marlon Manalo (11–6). [5] Chamat played Chang Pei-Wei in the semi-final, but lost 11–9. [6] He also reached this stage at the 2008 WPA World Eight-ball Championship, defeating Gabriele Cimmino, Kasper Kristoffersen (both 10–5) and Dimitri Jungo (10–6), before losing in the semi-final to Souquet 10–8. Chamat played on the International Pool Tour and, as of 2019, also appears at the Euro Tour events. [9] Chamat is one of the most successful players on the Tour, with four event wins, starting with his first tournament win in 1999, at the Finland Open. [10] He later won three more Euro Tour events, all in Austria in 2004, 2006 and 2009. [10] With four victories overall, he is in the top 10 winners of Euro Tour events. Chamat also won the UPA World Summit of Pool in 2005, defeating Corey Deuel in the finals. [11] [12]

Chamat semi-retired from professional pool in 2015, before taking over as captain at the Mosconi Cup. [13] Shortly before this, Chamat reached the last 16 at the 2015 WPA World Ten-ball Championship, losing to Yang Ching-shun 11–8. [14]

Mosconi Cup

Chamat represented Team Europe at the Mosconi Cup six times in (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005). [15] Despite the American side dominating the event at this time, the European side that Chamat was in won in 2002 was referred to as "one of the best moments of [his] career", by team-mate Steve Davis. [16] Through this period, Chamat secured 11 victories from 26 matches played at the event. [14]

After failing to regain his place on the team in 2006, Chamat continued to play professionally, however, he took over as non-playing captain for Europe at the Mosconi Cup at the 2015 event. [14] Chamat captained the team to three victories at the 2015, 2016 and 2017 events. [17] [18] [19] In his fourth event as captain, he saw a losing effort in 2018, the first USA victory since 2009. [20] [21] [22] During the event, after Joshua Filler put Europe 3–0 ahead, he neglected to shake the hand of his opponent Dennis Hatch, which led to Hatch leaving the arena feeling aggrieved. Chamat, as captain, took Filler to one side to calm the player down. Filler later praised Chamat, saying: "He is the best captain." [23] In total, Chamat has represented Europe at the event on ten occasions. [24] [25]

Personal life

Chamat was born 6 May 1975, in Borlänge, Sweden. [10] He is a co-owner of the Interpool Restaurant and Biljard clubs in Gävle, Uppsala and Malmö, Sweden. [14] The club has become a base for pool in Sweden, and began to run international pool events in 2009, with the interpool open 9-ball starting in 2009. [26] [27] [28] Chamat is nicknamed Napoleon for his attitude whilst playing pool and his small stature, standing at 5 ft 4 in (1.63 m) tall. [14] [29]

Nick van den Berg is a Dutch professional pool player. He was the runner up at the 2005 WPA World Eight-ball Championship, where he lost to Wu Chia-ching 11–5 in the final. He is a multiple time winner of events on the Euro Tour, winning 10 tournaments between 2002 and 2017, the fourth highest in the history of the tour. A six-time winner of the European Pool Championships, Van den Berg has represented Europe at the Mosconi Cup on eight occasions, winning the event on six occasions as well as tying the event in 2006.

Oliver Ortmann is a German professional pool player from Gelsenkirchen. Ortmann is a three-time world champion, winning the 1995 WPA World Nine-ball Championship and the 2007 and 2010 World Straight Pool Championship. Ortmann became the second player to win three WPA world championships. With fourteen wins, he the second most successful player at the European Pool Championships. Ortmann is also the second most successful player on the Euro Tour, winning fourteen events. Ortmann was the first non-American player to win the BCA U.S. Open Straight Pool Championship, in 1989.

Daryl Peach is an English professional pool player, from Lancashire, who resides in Blackpool, England. He won the 2007 WPA World Nine-ball Championship, where he defeated the Philippines' Roberto Gomez 17–15 in the final to become the first British player to win the WPA World Nine-ball Championship.

Fabio Petroni is an Italian pool player.

The 2018 Mosconi Cup, was the 25th edition of the annual nine-ball pool competition between teams representing Europe and the United States. It took place between 4–7 December 2018 at the Alexandra Palace in London, England and was sponsored by partypoker.

Jayson Shaw is a Scottish pool player. In 2010, Shaw was a WPA World Blackball Champion. In 2016, Shaw won the 25th International Challenge of Champions event.

Joshua Filler is a German pool player from Bönen, Germany. In 2018 Filler defeated Carlo Biado 13–10 to win the 2018 WPA World Nine-ball Championship. The same year he was the youngest player to win the China Open and 2018 10-ball European Pool Championships. Filler became WPA and Euro Tour world number 1 in 2019, and later reached the final of the 2019 WPA World Ten-ball Championship before losing 10–7 to Ko Ping-chung.

Alexander Kazakis is a Greek professional pool player. Kazakis is a former European 10-ball champion, and regular 9-ball player. In 2018, he was the number one ranked player by the World Pool-Billiard Association.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Euro Tour</span>

The Euro Tour is a series of professional pool events set around Europe, founded in 1992, and created by the European Pocket Billiard Federation. The Tour's first event was the Belgium Open, held on May 29 – 31, 1992. The event was won by Mika Immonen.

Mario He is an Austrian professional pool player. He is a former winner of the European Pool Championships, and winner of both the 2017 and 2019 World Cup of Pool events alongside Albin Ouschan.

Charlie Williams is an American professional pool player. Williams represented America as a player at the Mosconi Cup 5 times and as a non-playing captain in 2011. In 2001, Williams founded the sports marketing company Dragon Promotions.

Ruslan Yuryevich Chinakhov is a Russian professional primarily nine-ball pool player. Ruslan was the world nine-ball Juniors champion in 2009. Chinakhov has won several events, including the Euro Tour Dutch Open 2017, defeating Christoph Reintjes in the final.

Francisco Sánchez Ruíz is a Spanish professional pool player and the reigning World champion in nine-ball.

Wiktor Zieliński is a Polish professional pool player. He is the youngest player to ever win a Euro Tour event, winning the 2017 Treviso Open at the age of 16.

The Dynamic Billard Leende Open 2019 was a nine-ball pool tournament, and the first Euro Tour event of 2019. The event was held between 7–10 February 2019, at the Golden Tulip Jagershorst hotel in Leende, Netherlands. The event was won by Germany's Joshua Filler, who defeated Ruslan Chinakhov 9–7 in the final. This was Filler's first Euro Tour win, having previously been a runner-up at three previous events.

Christoph Reintjes is a German professional pool player. He is best well known for being the runner-up at the 2017 Dutch Open.

Nikolaos "Nick" Malai is an Albanian professional pool player. Malai is a former winner of an event on the Euro Tour, winning the 2012 North Cyprus Open.
