David Alcaide Bermúdez (born 14 December 1978) is a Spanish professional pool player. He is a two-time winner of the World Pool Masters, winning the 2017 event, defeating Jayson Shaw 8–7 in the final, and again in 2019 defeating Alexander Kazakis 9–8. Alcaide is a three-time world championship semi-finalist having reached the stage at the WPA World 10-ball Championship, in 2009 and 2015, and the WPA World Eight-ball Championship in 2011.

Alcaide has also represented Europe at the Mosconi Cup three times in 2006, 2017 and 2021. At the 2006 event, he was the first Spanish player to compete in the competition. In addition to pool, Alcaide also plays snooker, having competed at the 2019 Gibraltar Open professional snooker event. He has also represented Spain at the World Cup of Pool on multiple occasions, partnering fellow Spaniard Francisco Sánchez Ruíz in the events.

Career

Nine-ball

Alcaide began playing pool aged 5, and became national Spanish eight-ball champion aged 14. [1] Alcaide made his first breakthrough reaching third place at the Spanish Open in 1998. [2] Later during the 2001 WPA World Nine-ball Championship, he reached the knockout rounds, before defeating Alex Lely 9–7 and Dimitri Jungo 9–3 to reach the last 16, before losing to Jeremy Jones 9–11. [3] During the 2006 event he survived the group stage, before defeating Jörn Kaplan and Lee Vann Corteza but was eliminated in the round of 16 by Rodolfo Luat. [4] Having reached the last 16, Alcaide was seeded 25th for 2007 event, [5] and despite losing once in the double-elimination round to Muhammad Zulfikri 1–9, he reached the final rounds with a 9–0 whitewash of Stephen Capaldi and a 9–4 win over Robb Saez. [6] However, Alcaide lost 10–1 to ninth seed Francisco Bustamante in the knockout round. [7] In 2013, Alcaide competed at the 2013 World Games, but lost in the nine-ball event 11–7 in the last 16 to Liu Haitao. [8] [9] At the 2015 WPA World Nine-ball Championship, Alcaide won against Chu Bingjie and Hesam Abdulaziz in the group stage to qualify for the knockout round, before winning over Yang Ching-shun and Toh Lian Han. Alcaide lost to Wojciech Szewczyk 10–11 in the last 16. [10]

Alcaide was the first Spanish player to represent Europe in the Mosconi Cup, which he did in 2006. Alongside fellow Mosconi Cup debutant Imran Majid, the pair defeated Earl Strickland and Johnny Archer. [11] Alcaide finished the event with four wins and two losses, however his 5–2 loss to Corey Deuel was the last of the event, seeing the cup end tied at 12–12. [12] [13] Alcaide did not represent the team again, until coach Marcus Chamat played Alcaide in the 2017 Mosconi Cup as a wildcard. [13] In 2017, Alcaide won three games, and lost once, before Europe won 11–4. [14] Later in the season, Alcaide won the 2017 Kremlin World Cup. [15]

Alcaide won the 2017 World Pool Masters, having defeated the defending champion Shane Van Boening in the second round, and defeating Jayson Shaw in the final 9–8. [16] [17] Two years later, at the 2019 World Pool Masters – a field made up of previous winners – Alcaide once again won the event beating Alexander Kazakis in the final 9–8. [18] He came back from down 0–5 against Kazakis and hit a full table bank shot to sink the last 9-ball . [19]

Other disciplines

In addition to nine-ball, Alcaide is an accomplished ten-ball player. At the 2009 WPA World Ten-ball Championship, Alcaide reached the knockout rounds before defeating Antonio Gabica 9–8, Chao Fong-pang 9–5, Dennis Orcollo and Darren Appleton (both 9–6) to reach the semi-finals, before losing to Lee Vann Corteza 9–7, after leading 7–6. [20] Alcaide repeated this performance, losing only to eventual winner Dennis Orcollo and win the bronze medal at the 2011 WPA World Eight-ball Championship. In the match for third place, he won against Darren Appleton 9–2. [21] At the 2015 WPA World Ten-ball Championship, Alcaide reached the knockout round, defeating Francisco Bustamante 11–9, Chang Jung-lin 11–8, Mieszko Fortuński 11–7 and Johann Chua 11–9 to reach a third world championship semi-final. [22] In this semi-final, Alcaide once again lost, this time to Carlo Biado 2–11. [23] He won one event on the Predator International ten-ball Tour, at the 2009 Portugal Open. [24]

Alcaide is a two-time Euro Tour champion, having won both the 2009 Treviso Open  [ de ] and 2016 Treviso Open, reaching the final on three other occasions, and the semi-final on six occasions. [25] In March 2019, Alcaide competed in a professional snooker ranking event when he took part in the 2019 Gibraltar Open after successfully qualifying, where he lost 1–4 to David Gilbert in the first round. [26] Alcaide has represented Spain at the World Cup of Pool on nine occasions, alongside partner Francisco Sánchez Ruíz, but only passed the first round on three occasions. [27] Alcaide is a several time European Pool Championships winner, having won the Straight pool championship in 2010, eight-ball in 2013 and the ten-ball event twice, in 2014 and 2016. [28]

Personal life

Alcaide was born on 14 December 1978 in Málaga, Spain, [29] currently resides in Salamanca, [30] and has a daughter, Daniella. [31] He is sponsored by Predator Cues, and plays for Club 6 in Málaga. [32] Alcaide appeared as a color commentator for Eurosport in Spain alongside Martín Pérez and Sergio Manuel Gutiérrez. [33]

Marcus Chamat, is a Swedish professional eight-ball and nine-ball pool player. He was nicknamed "Napoleon" due to his personality and standing at 5 ft 4 in (1.63 m) tall. He is a two time European Pool Championships winner, and one of the most successful players on the Euro Tour, winning four events, and finishing runner-up on twice. Chamat reached the semi-finals of the 2004 WPA World Nine-ball and the 2008 WPA World Eight-ball Championships, but did not reach the final of a world championship event.

Oliver Ortmann is a German professional pool player from Gelsenkirchen. Ortmann is a three-time world champion, winning the 1995 WPA World Nine-ball Championship and the 2007 and 2010 World Straight Pool Championship. Ortmann became the second player to win three WPA world championships. With fourteen wins, he the second most successful player at the European Pool Championships. Ortmann is also the second most successful player on the Euro Tour, winning fourteen events. Ortmann was the first non-American player to win the BCA U.S. Open Straight Pool Championship, in 1989.

Daryl Peach is an English professional pool player, from Lancashire, who resides in Blackpool, England. He won the 2007 WPA World Nine-ball Championship, where he defeated the Philippines' Roberto Gomez 17–15 in the final to become the first British player to win the WPA World Nine-ball Championship.

Melling has also twice won the International Pool Masters and the European Professional title (2002). He was the first player to win two International Tour events back to back. His entrance by walk-on music is from the song “Wannabe” by Spice Girls. Melling is also the only cue sports player to hold professional status in English 8 ball, American pool and snooker.

Albin Alois Ouschan is an Austrian professional pool and billiards player. Ouschan was the 2016 WPA World Nine-ball Championship winner, as well as the runner-up in 2014. He also won the 14.1 Continuous European championship the same year. Ouschan is a multiple time Austrian champion in 8-ball, ten-ball and straight pool. Ouschan alongside partner Mario He won both the 2017 World Cup of Pool, 2019 World Cup of Pool and reached the final of the 2018 World Cup of Pool. They would lose 10–3 to the Chinese team of Wu Jia-qing & Liu Haitao. He won the WPA World Nine-ball Championship for the second time in 2021, beating Omar Al-Shaheen 13–9 in the final. He won the International Open in 2021, defeating Dennis Orcollo 13–6 in the final.

Jayson Shaw is a Scottish professional pool player. In 2010, Shaw was a WPA World Blackball Champion. In 2016, Shaw won the 25th International Challenge of Champions event.

Eklent Kaçi, also known as Klenti Kaçi is an Albanian professional pool and amateur snooker player. Kaçi won the WPA World Ten-ball Championship in 2021 and 2023 and reached the semi-finals of the 2017 WPA World Nine-ball Championship. He has been the top-ranked played in the world of 9-ball pool.

Joshua Filler is a German professional pool player from Bönen, Germany. In 2018 Filler defeated Carlo Biado 13–10 to win the 2018 WPA World Nine-ball Championship. In 2017 he was the youngest player to win the China Open, and in 2018 he also won the 10-ball European Pool Championships. Filler became WPA and Euro Tour world number 1 in 2019, and later he reached the final of the 2019 WPA World Ten-ball Championship before losing 10–7 to Ko Ping-chung.

Fedor Alekseyevich Gorst is a Russian-born American professional pool player.

The 2019 World Pool Masters was a nine-ball pool tournament which took place in Gibraltar from 29 to 31 March 2019. It was the 26th edition of the World Pool Masters invitational tournament organised by Matchroom Sport. The event contained increased participation from 16 to 24 players, and increased total prize fund to $100,000. Spaniard David Alcaide won the event, defeating Greece's Alexander Kazakis in the final 9–8, doubling the final ball the length of the table to win. The reigning champion was Dutchman Niels Feijen who defeated Shane Van Boening of the United States in the previous year's final to win the title for the second time in his career. Feijen was defeated in the opening round by Alcaide.

Francisco Sánchez Ruíz is a Spanish professional pool player and the reigning World champion in nine-ball.

Wiktor Zieliński is a Polish professional pool player. He is the youngest player to ever win a Euro Tour event, winning the 2017 Treviso Open at the age of 16.

Steve Knight was an English professional pool player. Knight spent four times representing the European team at the Mosconi Cup and was the winner of the 2000 World Pool League.
