Margaret D. Strachan (born 1935) [1] is an American politician who served on the Portland City Council,in Portland,Oregon,from 1981 to 1986. [2] She was the first woman elected to the Council (Connie McCready and Mildred Schwab were appointed). [3] [4]
She was born Margaret Darcy [5] in Helena,Montana. She graduated from Carroll College with a degree in English and became a high-school teacher. She taught in Montana for three years until she moved to Portland in 1973. [5]
She worked as a neighborhood activist,including as a coordinator for the City of Portland's Office of Neighborhood Associations and later on the staff of Commissioner Mike Lindberg as a liaison to neighborhood organizations. [6] She was the campaign manager for Charles Jordan's first run for election to the city council, [5] in 1974,after Jordan was initially appointed to the council.
She was elected to the Portland City Council in March 1981, [7] and was sworn-in on April 9,1981. [8] Her 1981 election was to a partial term only,to fill a vacancy on the council created in November 1980 as a result of Frank Ivancie's succeeding Connie McCready as mayor, [6] but she won re-election in May 1982. [9]
She ran for re-election again in 1986,but lost to Bob Koch [10] and her time on the council ended at the end of 1986. [1] She was instrumental in the redevelopment of the Pearl District from an industrial district to a high-end neighborhood. [11] During her term she was also involved in developing the Central City Plan and building public housing along the Park Blocks.
In 1988,she became the Executive Director of Central City Concern, [12] a Portland non-profit that provides resources to homeless people. She left the organization a year later,in March 1989. [13]
Margaret Darcy married Jim Strachan in 1954,at age 19,and became Margaret Strachan. [5] They divorced before she moved to Portland. In Oregon,she married Sumner Sharpe. [5] She is currently retired and living in Montana.

The MAX Yellow Line is a light rail service in Portland,Oregon,United States,operated by TriMet as part of the MAX Light Rail system. It connects North Portland to Portland City Center and Portland State University (PSU) with 17 stops from Expo Center station to PSU South/Southwest 6th and College station. The line travels from Portland Expo Center in the north,south to the Rose Quarter through a 5.8-mile (9.3 km) light rail segment along the median of Interstate Avenue. From the Rose Quarter,it crosses the Willamette River via the Steel Bridge and enters downtown Portland,where it operates as a northbound-only service of the Portland Transit Mall on 6th Avenue. Service runs for approximately 21 hours daily with a headway of 15 minutes during most of the day.

She served as a City Commissioner from 1973 to 1986;she was appointed to fill the vacancy created when Neil Goldschmidt was elected mayor,and was re-elected three times. Her brother,Herbert M. Schwab,served on the Oregon Court of Appeals.
Amanda Fritz is a British-American politician and retired psychiatric nurse from the U.S. state of Oregon. Before being elected to Portland's City Council in 2008,Fritz was a neighborhood activist and seven-year member of the Portland Planning Commission. She was also the first candidate to win public financing under Portland's Clean Elections system in 2006,though she lost to incumbent Dan Saltzman in the first round of that year's election.
Shirley Todd Huffman was an American politician and legal secretary in the U.S. state of Oregon. Raised in Dayton,Oregon,she settled in Hillsboro,Oregon,where she served on the city council before serving two terms as mayor from 1985 to 1993. During her time as mayor,plans for the Westside Light Rail were approved,with Huffman receiving credit for the extension into downtown Hillsboro. After leaving office,she served on the board of directors of TriMet and as a development coordinator for the city.
Gordon C. Faber was an American politician and businessman in the U.S. state of Oregon. A native of Pennsylvania,he grew up in Hillsboro,Oregon. He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a small business owner before becoming a real estate agent and entering politics. He served on Hillsboro's budget committee and city council before serving two terms as mayor from 1993 to 2001. The Gordon Faber Recreation Complex in the city's northeast corner is named in his honor.
Gretchen Miller Kafoury was an American politician,who served in the Oregon House of Representatives,the Multnomah County Commission,and the Portland City Council. She served in the legislature from 1977–82,the Multnomah County Commission from 1985–91,and the Portland City Council from 1991-98.
Kvinneakt is an abstract bronze sculpture located on the Transit Mall of downtown Portland,Oregon. Designed and created by Norman J. Taylor between 1973 and 1975,the work was funded by TriMet and the United States Department of Transportation and was installed on the Transit Mall in 1977. The following year Kvinneakt appeared in the "Expose Yourself to Art" poster which featured future Mayor of Portland Bud Clark flashing the sculpture. It remained in place until November 2006 when it was removed temporarily during renovation of the Transit Mall and the installation of the MAX Light Rail on the mall.
Nicholas Stuyvesant Fish was an American politician and lawyer who served as a Commissioner of Portland,Oregon from 2008 to 2020. A Democrat,Fish worked with Portland Parks &Recreation,the Portland Housing Bureau,and the Bureau of Environmental Services.
Since the early 1980s,several non-steam-powered sternwheel riverboats have been built and operated on major waterways in the U.S. state of Oregon,primarily the Willamette and Columbia Rivers,as river cruise ships used for tourism. Although configured as sternwheelers,they are not paddle steamers,but rather are motor vessels that are only replicas of paddle steamers. They are powered instead by diesel engines. The Lurdine was,when launched in 1983,"the first passenger-carrying sternwheeler in decades to [operate] on the Columbia River". In the case of the 1983-built M.V. Columbia Gorge,the construction and operation of a tourist sternwheeler was led by local government officials who viewed the idea as potentially being a major tourist attraction,giving an economic boost to their area,Cascade Locks,Oregon.
Charles Ray Jordan was a Portland City Commissioner from 1974 until 1984. He was the first African-American city commissioner in Portland,Oregon,and is the namesake of the Charles Jordan Community Center.
Mike Lindberg is an American politician who served on the Portland,Oregon City Council from 1979 until 1996. His tenure of 17 years,three months was the longest of any city commissioner in the past 40 years,as of 2009;Lindberg's tenure was surpassed in May 2016 by that of Dan Saltzman.
Richard Waldo Bogle Jr. was an American journalist and politician. He was the first black television news reporter in Oregon and later served two terms as a Portland city commissioner.
