Marguerite Porter MBE (born 30 November 1948) [1] is an English former principal ballet dancer, turned actress and choreographer.

Biography

Born in Doncaster, [2] [3] Porter trained in Yorkshire and at the Royal Ballet School in London, where she was taught by Dame Ninette De Valois. [4]

After two years training she joined The Royal Ballet, where she is now a Governor, becoming Senior Principal Ballerina in 1978. In a 20-year association, she danced all the major roles, including Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake alongside Rudolf Nureyev, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Ophelia in Hamlet, and the title role in productions of Manon, Giselle, Daphnis and Chloe among others. [5] After leaving the Royal Ballet, she became a guest artiste for a further three years, during which time she published be autobiography Ballerina, A Dancer’s Life. She has made numerous appearances with English National Ballet.

Porter made her Broadway debut as the Queen in Matthew Bourne's production of Swan Lake. She also made a video based on ballet called Balletcise. Her television and films roles have included The Magic of the Dance with Margot Fonteyn, and the British Institute film Comrade Lady, directed by Nobby Clark and choreographed by David Bintley. She has since become an accomplished choreographer, including productions of The Garden of Eros for London City Ballet and Dancing at Lughnasa . [ citation needed ]

Porter teaches at the Royal Ballet School, where in 2008 she taught Marianela Núñez the steps of The Dying Swan as Michel Fokine choreographed for Anna Pavlova in 1907. [6] She has also taught at the Ballet Rambert, and as a guest teacher at the Hong Kong Ballet.

Porter is a Director of the Yorkshire Ballet Seminars (taking over from the retiring David Gayle), [2] and a governor of the Royal Ballet Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Royal Ballet School.

She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2015 New Year Honours for services to ballet. [7] [8]

Family

Porter was married to the actor Nicky Henson until his death in December 2019. The couple have one son, Keaton. [9]

Dame Margaret Evelyn de Arias DBE, known by the stage name Margot Fonteyn, was an English ballerina. She spent her entire career as a dancer with the Royal Ballet, eventually being appointed prima ballerina assoluta of the company by Queen Elizabeth II. Beginning ballet lessons at the age of four, she studied in England and China, where her father was transferred for his work. Her training in Shanghai was with George Goncharov, contributing to her continuing interest in Russian ballet. Returning to London at the age of 14, she was invited to join the Vic-Wells Ballet School by Ninette de Valois. She succeeded Alicia Markova as prima ballerina of the company in 1935. The Vic-Wells choreographer, Sir Frederick Ashton, wrote numerous parts for Fonteyn and her partner, Robert Helpmann, with whom she danced from the 1930s to the 1940s.

Dame Alicia Markova DBE was a British ballerina and a choreographer, director and teacher of classical ballet. Most noted for her career with Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and touring internationally, she was widely considered to be one of the greatest classical ballet dancers of the twentieth century. She was the first British dancer to become the principal dancer of a ballet company and, with Dame Margot Fonteyn, is one of only two English dancers to be recognised as a prima ballerina assoluta. Markova was a founder dancer of the Rambert Dance Company, The Royal Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, and was co-founder and director of the English National Ballet.

The Royal Ballet is a British internationally renowned classical ballet company, based at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, England. The largest of the five major ballet companies in Great Britain, the Royal Ballet was founded in 1931 by Dame Ninette de Valois, it became the resident ballet company of the Royal Opera House in 1946, and has purpose built facilities within these premises and was granted a royal charter in 1956, becoming recognised as Britain's flagship ballet company.

Gelsey Kirkland is an American ballerina. She received early ballet training at the School of American Ballet. Kirkland joined the New York City Ballet in 1968 at age 15, at the invitation of George Balanchine. She was promoted to soloist in 1969, and principal in 1972. She went on to create leading roles in many of the great twentieth century ballets by Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Antony Tudor, including Balanchine's revival of The Firebird, Robbins' Goldberg Variations, and Tudor's The Leaves are Fading. Balanchine re-choreographed his version of Stravinsky's The Firebird specifically for her. She left the New York City Ballet to join the American Ballet Theatre in 1974 as a principal dancer.

Susan Jaffe American ballerina

Susan Jaffe is an American former ballerina. In August 2012, she became the Dean of the School of Dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. Effective July 1, 2020, she became the Artistic Director of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. She will become the artistic director of the American Ballet Theatre at the end of 2022.

Cynthia Harvey is an American former ballet dancer, ballet mistress and educator. She joined the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in 1974 and was promoted to principal dancer in 1982. In 1986, she joined The Royal Ballet, becoming the company's first American principal dancer. She returned to ABT two years later, and retired in 1996. She then started teaching and staging ballets across the world. In 2016, she was named artistic director of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, the affiliated school of ABT. She will step down from the position in May 2022.

Gina Tse is an English ballerina of British-Chinese descent, and first soloist of the Royal Swedish Ballet. Beginning in the 2012-2013 season, she was elevated to the principal dancer of the company.

Francesca Hayward is a Kenyan-born English ballet dancer and actress. She is a principal dancer in the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden in London. In 2019, she starred as Victoria the White Cat in the musical film Cats, an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name.

Ida Praetorius Danish ballet dancer

Ida Praetorius is a Danish ballet dancer. She joined the Royal Danish Ballet in 2010, and was promoted to principal dancer in 2016. In 2021, she joined the Hamburg Ballet as a principal dancer.

Pietra De Mello-Pittman

Pietra-Marie de Mello-Pittman MBE is a Brazilian-British retired Royal Ballet dancer and co-founder and co-director of Sisters Grimm Ltd. She founded the company with composer Ella Spira in 2009 while still in the corps de ballet. A former First Artist of The Royal Ballet, she trained at The Royal Ballet Upper School and graduated into the Company in 2002. She was promoted to First Artist in 2008 and retired from the Company in 2015. In 2021 she received an MBE for services to International Trade and the Creative Industry in the New Year Honours.
