Maria Catherine Bertelli (born 6 October 1977) is a British volleyball player and former footballer. She competed for the Great Britain volleyball team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. [2] [3]
Bertelli played football for Wimbledon and Charlton Athletic in the FA Women's Premier League. In 2005, she was signed by Charlton coach Keith Boanas. That season she played in Charlton's 2–1 Premier League Cup final win over Arsenal. [4] In 2006–07 Charlton were beaten 4–1 by quadruple-winning Arsenal in the FA Women's Cup final, before a record crowd of 24,529 at the City Ground in Nottingham. Bertelli was booked for an early foul on Kelly Smith. [5]
When Charlton Athletic men's team were relegated in 2007 they ditched their women's team. Bertelli made public her disappointment: "To call it upsetting is an understatement." She decided to focus on volleyball, joining Great Britain's national training programme in Sheffield in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics. [6]
Kelly Jayne Smith is an English former football forward who spent three spells with FA WSL club Arsenal Ladies. After moving to the United States, Smith broke records with Seton Hall University then played professionally with Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) franchise Philadelphia Charge. After returning to Arsenal for a period which included a 2007 UEFA Women's Cup win, Smith was tempted back to America with another professional contract, this time with Boston Breakers in Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). She accumulated 117 caps for the England national team after making her debut in 1995. In 2012, Stoney succeeded Faye White as the England captain and also became captain of the newly formed Team GB squad for the 2012 London Olympics. She ended her playing career at Liverpool Ladies. She was the first head coach of the newly-formed Manchester United Women from June 2018 to May 2021.In the inaugural season, United won the FA Women's Championship title and promotion to the FA WSL. On 14 July 2021, Stoney was announced as the head coach of San Diego Wave FC, which began play in 2022.
Anita Amma Ankyewah Asante is an English football coach and former player who is the first-team coach at Bristol City. A defender or midfielder, she won 71 caps for the English national team and was selected in the Great Britain squad for the 2012 London Olympics. At club level, Asante has played for English clubs Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa, whilst also having played for Saint Louis Athletica, Chicago Red Stars, Washington Freedom and Sky Blue FC of the American Women's Professional Soccer (WPS).
