Marianne is a Finnish mint chocolate candy originally developed in 1949 by Chymos, now produced by Fazer. [1] [2] Marianne candies have a hard peppermint-flavoured shell and a chocolate filling.
Fazer bought Chymos in 1993 and Marianne moved to Fazer's product line. [2]
Production of Marianne started in 1949 at the Chymos factory in Toijala under instruction of master candymaker Aimo Martikainen. After the war, the Finnish people's appetite for candy was immense, and for some reason, Finns took a liking to a combination of chocolate and peppermint. In 1956, Chymos's new CEO Jouko Keränen had noticed the possibilities of the candy, but he thought the simple paper wrapper was too modest and common. He gave Aimo Vuorinen, the graphics artist at Chymos, the difficult task of "adding more glamour". [2]
Up to the 1930s, candy products in Finland were named along the lines of "Fazer mint chocolate" or "Chymos filled candies". These descriptions were written on top of the candy packaging. [2] In the 1950s after the war supermarkets became common in Finland, where customers picked their items from the shelf themselves and paid for them at the cashier's desk. This made the products need to sell themselves directly from the shelf. A brand image was needed for the products. The packaging had a great effect in this. [2] The diagonal red-white stripes describing the flavour of peppermint was an old European tradition. Even before the candy got its name Marianne, the stripes were present in the packaging and the candies were imprinted with the image of a sheaf. The product was just simply named "Chymos peppermint chocolate". [2]
Vuorinen thought that peppermint and chocolate were associated with France (similarly to Fazer's "French pastilles"). He sought some kind of French symbol other than the tricolour. He thought of the French national personification Marianne. He made sketches with the name Marianne and the image of the personification as a young maiden. However, this resulted in negative feedback. Chymos returned to the original red-white striped wrapper, imprinted with the name Marianne. It became Finland's best selling candy for years. [2]
The Marianne product family was joined in the 1970s by the toffee-filled Marimint (now known as Marianne Toffee) and the orange-flavoured AnneMari, which was later renamed Marianne Appelsiini. Nowadays it has become only one flavour variation in the mixed bag Marianne Mix, which is produced for Christmas season and travel retail. [2]
Fazer bought Chymos in 1993 and Marianne became part of its product line. Marianne was one of the products Fazer especially wanted, because it had established itself well both in Finland and elsewhere in Europe. [2] According to Fazer, Marianne is a combination of "the Russian candy tradition and the French taste". The annual production of the original Marianne candy in Lappeenranta in 1.4 million kilograms. [3]
In 2000, Marianne Light sweetened with xylitol instead of sugar and Marianne drops were introduced. Marianne drops came in three different packagings: a small box, a bag of 150 grams and a box of 200 grams for travel retail. A bakery product called Marianne Crush was introduced in 2003. [2]
In 2006, the Marianne Snacks chocolate bar and loose candy were introduced, followed by a Marianne liquorice bar in 2009. A Marianne Mix box containing Marianne candies with traditional, toffee-filled and orange-flavoured Marianne candies is available at Christmas time and for travel retail. [1]
Fazer has expanded the Marianne product line to new products. Fazer's Kismet chocolate bars are available with Marianne filling. [4] In autumn 2013, coffee-flavoured Marianne Café candies and Marianne biscuits were introduced. [5] The Fazer product line also includes Marianne cake rolls and Marianne muffins. [6] Nestlé also produces Marianne ice cream. [7]
The Marianne park was opened in Lappeenranta near the Chymos factory in 2013. It is maintained by the city of Lappeenranta and Fazer. [2]
Caramilk is a brand name used for two distinct chocolate bar products made by Cadbury. Both were introduced in 1968. The Canadian version of Caramilk is a milk chocolate bar filled with caramel. In Australia the Caramilk brand is used for a caramel-flavoured white chocolate bar.
Bounty is a coconut-filled, chocolate-enrobed candy bar manufactured by Mars, Incorporated, introduced in 1951 in the United Kingdom and Canada. It is a direct emulation of the Mounds bar introduced by Peter Paul in 1936, and also copies the milk chocolate enrobing of Hershey's Almond Joy, introduced in 1948. It is no longer domestically sold within the United States, only being available via import sales.
Cadbury Dairy Milk is a British brand of milk chocolate manufactured by Cadbury. It was introduced in the United Kingdom in June 1905 and now consists of a number of products. Every product in the Dairy Milk line is made with exclusively milk chocolate. In 1928, Cadbury's introduced the "glass and a half" slogan to accompany the Dairy Milk chocolate bar, to advertise the bar's higher milk content.
Tyrkisk peber is a salty liquorice candy flavoured with salmiac, produced by the Finnish company Fazer and popular in Northern Europe.
Aero is an aerated chocolate bar manufactured by the Vevey-based company Nestlé. Originally produced by Rowntree's, Aero bars were introduced in 1935 to the North of England as the "new chocolate". By the end of that year, it had proved sufficiently popular with consumers that sales were extended throughout the United Kingdom.

The Wonka Bar is a fictional chocolate bar, introduced as a key story point in the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Barrie's play Quality Street. Since 1988, the confectionery has been produced by Nestlé. Quality Street has long been a competitor to Cadbury Roses, which were launched by Cadbury in 1938. Nestlé does not distribute Quality Street in the US, but it may be ordered online for delivery, or found in specialty candy shops.
Cadbury Roses is a brand of chocolates made by Cadbury. Introduced in the UK in 1938, they were named after the English packaging equipment company "Rose Brothers" based in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, that manufactured and supplied the machines that wrapped the chocolates.
Curly Wurly is a brand of chocolate bar manufactured by Cadbury and sold worldwide. It was launched in the UK in 1970. Its shape resembles three flattened, intertwined serpentine strings. The bar is made of chocolate-coated caramel.
Dumle is a brand of chocolate-covered toffees marketed and manufactured by Fazer.
Jersey Milk is a chocolate bar brand consisting of solid milk chocolate. It has a white wrapper with gold writing. The Jersey Milk chocolate bar was introduced in 1924. Originally produced by Neilson Dairy, production was transferred to Cadbury's when Neilson sold the Cadbury's product lines that Neilson had acquired in 1987 back to Cadbury's in 1996, but Jersey Milk packages continue to bear the Neilson brand as of January 2022.
Omar is a caramel candy manufactured by Fazer Confectionery of Finland. Ingredients used in the manufacture of the confectionery are milk, sugar, glucose syrup, hydrogenated vegetable oil, milk fat, stabilizer (E420), salt and vanillin aroma. Omar is sold in 220 gram bags.
Domino is a brand of cookies manufactured by the Finnish food company Fazer. Domino cookies consist of three layers, of which the upper and lower layer are made from cocoa-flavoured biscuit and the middle one is a soft vanilla-flavoured creme filling.
Minttu is a Finnish brand of peppermint-flavoured liqueur produced by Pernod Ricard. A characteristic ingredient of the liqueur is peppermint, to give a fresh taste and aroma.
Chymos Oy was a Finnish company founded in 1906, producing juice, jam, wine, liqueurs and candy. In 1993 the company's candy production was bought out by Fazer, and in 2006 Chymos was fully assimilated into Cloetta Fazer.
Vihreät kuulat is a brand of pear-flavoured gummy candies produced by Fazer, sold in boxes and as loose candy. The Finlandia candy selection includes spheres of other colours as well.
Kiss-Kiss is a brand of candy launched by the Finnish company Fazer in 1897. It is Fazer's third oldest brand of candy. Kiss-Kiss is currently sold at Christmas time in a separate package and all year round in the Fazerin Parhain candy mix bag. It is oblong, pink in colour, with a soft and crunchy shell containing sticky toffee.
