Marijke Indradebie Djwalapersad (28 December 1951) is a Surinamese politician who served as Chairperson of the National Assembly of Suriname from 1996 until 2000. [1] She was the first women to serve as chairperson. [3] [4] In 1999,Djwalapersad founded the political party Naya Kadam, [5] but was not re-elected. [6]
Djwalapersad was born in the Saramacca Polder on 28 December 1951. She was active as a translator in Hindi,English,Sarnami,Sranan Tongo and Dutch. In 1991,she joined the Progressive Reform Party (VHP),but failed to be elected. [7]
Djwalapersad was first elected to the National Assembly in 1996. After the elections,there was a disagreement within the VHP whether they should become part of the government. Five elected members including Djwalapersad split from the VHP,and formed the Basic Party for Renewal and Democracy (BVD) which would enter into a coalition government with the NDP. [4] On 10 October 1996, [1] Djwalapersad was elected Chairperson of the National Assembly of Suriname,and was the first women to serve as chairperson. [3] [4] During her tenure as chairperson,she cancelled all international trips by Assembly members,because the economic climate did not allow for it. She also ended payment for absentee Assembly members. [8]
In 1999,Djwalapersad founded the political party Naya Kadam,but remained chairperson. [5] She was not re-elected during the 2000 elections, [6] and Jagernath Lachmon was chosen as the new chair. [1] Djwalapersad would become the only female chairperson of the Sanatan Dharm Foundation,an organisation for practitioners of the Sanātanī faction of Hinduism. [9] In 2019,Djwalapersad was awarded the Golden Gavel Award by the Platform Politically Active Women . [2]

Saramacca Polder is a resort in Suriname,located in the Wanica District. Its population at the 2012 census was 10,217. And the majority of the population is of East Indian descent. The Saramacca Polder was created between 1894 and 1904. The main function was agriculture. The Commissaris Weytinghweg was built in 1906,and connects the polder with Paramaribo. Initially the area was mainly used for rice cultivation,but has become home to companies and suburban housing.
Jules Sedney was a Surinamese politician,and Prime Minister of Suriname from 20 November 1969 to 24 December 1973. In 1980,he became governor of the Central Bank of Suriname,but had to flee the country in 1983 after a dispute with Dési Bouterse. Sedney returned to Suriname in 1989.

Chandrikapersad "Chan" Santokhi is a Surinamese politician and former police officer who is the 9th president of Suriname,since 2020. After winning the 2020 elections,Santokhi was the sole nominee for president of Suriname. On 13 July,Santokhi was elected president by acclamation in an uncontested election. He was inaugurated on 16 July.

Gillmore AndréHoefdraad is a Surinamese economist and politician. He was Governor of the Central Bank of Suriname from 2010 until 2015,and Ministry of Finance of Suriname from 2015 to 2020. In January 2020,it was reported that US$100 million was missing from the Central Bank. In July 2021,an Interpol red notice was issued for Hoefdraad. Hoefdraad was sentenced in absentia to 12 years imprisonment on 17 December 2021.
