Marina Butovskaya (born 27 June 1959) is a Russian ethologist and cultural anthropologist.
She was born in the Soviet Union in the city of Cherkassy (present-day Ukraine),she earned a Master of Arts degree from Moscow State University in 1982. She was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree by the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1986,and a Doctor of Science degree by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994. [1]
At the beginning of her career,Butovskaya undertook a study of the social ecology of non-human primates,as well as studies of children's social behavior. This work brought her widespread recognition. [1]
In the 1990s,Butovskaya undertook comparative field research across two cultural groups:Kalmyk people and Russian people,working in the areas around Moscow,in the Tula region,Elista,and the village of Iki-Chinos in Kalmykia. Her study examined how children were socialized with respect to aggressive and peacemaking behavior,by studying interactions between children at play outdoors. She stated based on her research that children were able to cope with conflict among adults by the age of 6–7. [1]
Butovskaya later began studying the anthropology of beggars in urban Russia,and eventually to a cross-cultural study of begging in Moscow,Prague,and Budapest. [1] She is also studying the movement of urban pedestrians. [1]
Galina Vasilyevna Starovoitova was a Soviet dissident,Russian politician and ethnographer known for her work to protect ethnic minorities and promote democratic reforms in Russia. She was shot to death in her apartment building in 1998.

Culturology or the science of culture is a branch of the social sciences concerned with the scientific understanding,description,analysis,and prediction of cultures as a whole. While ethnology and anthropology studied different cultural practices,such studies included diverse aspects:sociological,psychological,etc.,and the need was recognized for a discipline focused exclusively on cultural aspects.
Tatyana Ivanovna Zaslavskaya was a Russian economic sociologist and a theoretician of perestroika. She was the prime author of the Novosibirsk Report and several books on the economy of the Soviet Union and in sociology of the countryside. She was a member of the Consulting Committee to the President of Russia from 1991 to 1992 and also a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Zaslavskaya was the founder of RPORC and also its director in the years from 1987 to 1992. In 2000 she was the Laureate of the Demidov Prize and the honorary president of the Levada Center.
