Biography

Marion Barbeau was born in 1991 in Nogent-sur-Marne, in the Val-de-Marne department. [1] Her father was a dentist. [2] She began practicing dance at the age of six, studying at a school in Fontenay-sous-Bois. [3]

After studying at the Conservatoire de Paris, she entered the ballet school of the Paris Opera Ballet in 2002. In 2008, at the age of seventeen, she joined its corps de ballet . In 2019, she became a première danseuse (first dancer). [4] [5] [6]

In addition to her classical repertoire, she gradually embraced contemporary dance. In her evolution, which began under the guidance of Benjamin Millepied, she was encouraged by Aurélie Dupont, director of the Paris Opera Ballet since 2016, who included many non-classical productions in her repertoire. Barbeau credited her experience with Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter, who she met at the Paris Opera in 2018, as the "real turning point" in her journey into the contemporary genre. Shechter's piece The Art of Not Looking Back entered the Paris Opera Ballet's repertoire in 2018, and was recorded for video by director Cédric Klapisch. [7] [8]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Women in dance</span>

The important place of women in dance can be traced back to the origins of civilization. Cave paintings, Egyptian frescos, Indian statuettes, ancient Greek and Roman art and records of court traditions in China and Japan all testify to the important role women played in ritual and religious dancing from the start. In the Middle Ages, what has become known as ballet had its beginnings in Italian court festivals when women frequently played the parts of men. It was however in late 17th-century France that the Paris Opera produced the first celebrated ballerinas. While women began to dominate the ballet scene in the 18th century, it was with the advent of Romantic ballet in the 19th century that they became the undisputed centre of attraction with stars playing the leading roles in the works of Marius Petipa, appearing in theatres across Europe from Milan's La Scala to the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. More recently, women have played a leading role in developing various forms of modern dance including flamenco and expressionist dance.

Danseur étoile or danseuse étoile, literally "star dancer", is the highest rank a dancer can reach at the Paris Opera Ballet. It is equivalent to the title "Principal dancer" used in English or to the title "Primo Ballerino" or "Prima Ballerina" in Italian.
