Mark Abrahams (born 1958) is an American fashion and portrait photographer known for his raw, black-and-white celebrity portraits. [1] His work has been featured in Bazaar, [2] Glamour, GQ , The New York Times Magazine , [3] V, Vanity Fair, and Vogue. [4] [5] [6]

Early life

Born in Santa Ana, California, Abrahams discovered photography after receiving a Nikon FM camera. In the 1980s, he worked as a truck driver while developing film in a darkroom he set up at home. [7] [8] By the 1990s, he began photographing musicians and supermodels, with his work appearing in international editions of Vogue and GQ. [8] [9]

Career

Abrahams' work has appeared in Harper's Bazaar, Glamour , GQ, Vanity Fair, Interview Magazine, and more. In 2015, he photographed Sharon Stone and Allison Williams for Harper's Bazaar. [10] [11] He has contributed over 630 editorial photographs featured in various fashion magazines and journals. [12] He explains that in his portrait and editorial work, “The intent of it is to strip away all the norms and expectations and get to the heart of the matter." [3]

Abrahams has photographed celebrities such as Julianne Moore, George Clooney, and Michelle Obama. [4] [5] [9] [13] He has worked on campaigns for brands like L'Oreal (featuring Susan Sarandon), [14] [15] [16] Avon, [17] Neiman Marcus, [18] Converse, [19] Warner Brother's Pictures, [20] Barclay's Bank, [21] and Omega. [22] [23] His work has been exhibited internationally, including the Jaguar Summer Museum in Moscow in an exhibition "Two Colors". [24] [25]

Publications

In 2011, Abrahams released a book of black-and-white portraits, Mark Abrahams, which was launched by Annie Lebovitz. [8] [26] [27] [28] [29] "Annie said that when she looks at [his] images, she sees the person and not the celebrity". [29]

Norman Parkinson was an English portrait and fashion photographer. His work revolutionised British fashion photography, as he moved his subjects out of the studio and used outdoor settings. He became an official royal photographer in 1969, taking photographs for Princess Anne's 19th birthday and the Investiture portrait of Charles III as Prince of Wales. Many other royal portraits included official portraits of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother for her 75th birthday. He was known for using elements of humour in his photographs. Parkinson received many honours during his life including the Royal Photographic Society's Progress Medal, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Society of Magazine Photographers, a Google Doodle, and a British postage stamp.

Alberto Rizzo, was an Italian photographer and painter. He was born in La Spezia, outside of Rome. Rizzo studied painting, design, and graphic arts at the famed Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera, Milan. Rizzo was also trained as a classical ballet dancer in Italy and France working with great choreographers such as Maurice Béjart. He came to America in 1960 at the invitation of Hermes Pan. He started off his American career in California, working with Fred Astaire among others.
