Mark Major is a British lighting designer and architect. He is the co-founder of Speirs Major, a lighting design studio. [1] [2]

Career

Major is an architect by training. [1] Having previously worked with lighting designer Jonathan Speirs at Lighting Design Partnership in Edinburgh, the pair established their own lighting design studio Speirs and Major Associates in 1993. [3] In 2010, the studio was rebranded Speirs + Major, [4] and in 2020 as Speirs Major. [5]

Major was Lighting Design Advisor to the Olympic Delivery Authority for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012. [6] He became Master for the Faculty for the Royal Designers for Industry in November 2019. [7]

Major's notable lighting projects include the Millennium Dome, Greenwich, London, UK (1999), [8] Terminal 5, Heathrow, London, UK (2008), [9] Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing, China (2008), [1] and the interior of St Paul's Cathedral, London, UK (2006). [8] [10] He is active in the field of urban design and light masterplanning [11] and produced the Lighting Vision for the City of London, UK in 2018. [12]

Awards and honours

In 2012, Major was named a Royal Designer for Industry for his "innovative use of light to create public space". [13] He received the 'Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Design' award at the FX Awards in 2015. [14]

Major is a Fellow of the International Association of Lighting Designers. [15]

Speirs Major is a UK lighting design practice founded by Jonathan Speirs (1958-2012) and Mark Major in 1993. The practice is noted for its illumination of many prominent buildings, including Barajas International Airport, 30 St Mary Axe, the Millennium Dome and the interior of St. Pauls Cathedral. The firm has also developed lighting master plans for several British cities, including Cambridge, Coventry, Durham, Newcastle, and for major private developments including Greenwich Peninsula and King’s Cross Central, London.

Patrick Woodroffe is a lighting designer and director working in the worlds of music, dance, fashion, art and architecture.

Ernest Race (1913-1964) was an English textile and furniture designer, born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1913, and died in 1964 in London. His best-known designs are the BA3 aluminium chair of 1945 and the Antelope, designed for the Festival of Britain in 1951. The BA3 won a gold medal at the 10th Milan Trienale in 1954, where the Antelope also won a silver medal. He was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 1953.

City Hall, in the London Borough of Newham in east London, is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA), the regional government for Greater London.
