Marun Field is an oil field in the Khuzestan province of Iran and is the second-largest oil field in Iran. The field was discovered in 1963, and owned by state-owned National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and operated by National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC). [1]

The Marun field contains estimated recoverable oil reserves of 22 billion barrels making it the world's sixth biggest onshore oil field in the world. [2] Marun is currently producing approximately 520,000 barrels per day (83,000 m3/d) of crude oil per day. It is the second biggest producing oil field in Iran, after Ahvaz Field. [3]

The super-giant Marun field, has long been one of the most prolific oil fields in Iran. It reached a peak of 1.34 million b/d in 1976, and although it has since declined, it remains in the top three producing fields alongside Ahvaz Field and Gachsaran Field. [4] The smaller Kupal oil field and Shadegan oil field, located north and south of Marun. The Marun field was brought on stream in 1966 and its production gradually raised to more than one million barrels of oil a day in 1972. [5] It consists of two oil reservoirs and one gas reservoir named Asmari, Bangestan, and Khami, respectively.

Cantarell Field or Cantarell Complex is an aging supergiant offshore oil field in Mexico. It was discovered in 1976 after oil stains were noticed by a fisherman, Rudesindo Cantarell Jimenez, in 1972. It was placed on nitrogen injection in 2000, and production peaked at 2.1 million barrels per day (330,000 m3/d) in 2004. In terms of cumulative production to date, it was the largest oil field in Mexico, and one of the largest in the world. However, production has declined since 2004, falling to 158,300 barrels per day (25,200 m3/d) in 2022. In 2009 it was superseded by Ku-Maloob-Zaap as Mexico's largest oil field.

The South Pars/North Dome field is a natural-gas condensate field located in the Persian Gulf. It is by far the world's largest natural gas field, with ownership of the field shared between Iran and Qatar. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the field holds an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet of in-situ natural gas and some 50 billion barrels of natural gas condensates. On the list of natural gas fields it has almost as much recoverable reserves as all the other fields combined. It has significant geostrategic influence.

Proven oil reserves in Iran, according to its government, rank fourth largest in the world at approximately as of 2013, although it ranks third if Canadian reserves of unconventional oil are excluded. This is roughly 10% of the world's total proven petroleum reserves. At 2020 rates of production, Iran's oil reserves would last 145 years if no new oil was found.

The natural gas in Qatar covers a large portion of the world supply of natural gas. According to the Oil & Gas Journal, as of January 1, 2011, reserves of natural gas in Qatar were measured at approximately 896 trillion cubic feet ; this measurement means that the state contains 14% of all known natural-gas reserves, as the world's third-largest reserves, behind Russia and Iran. The majority of Qatar's natural gas is located in the massive offshore North Field, which spans an area roughly equivalent to Qatar itself. A part of the world's largest non-associated, natural-gas field, the North Field, is a geological extension of Iran's South Pars / North Dome Gas-Condensate field, which holds an additional 450 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural-gas reserves.

Petroleum industry in Iran Overview of the petroleum industry of Iran

Iran is an energy superpower and the petroleum industry in Iran plays an important part in it. In 2004, Iran produced 5.1 percent of the world's total crude oil, which generated revenues of US$25 billion to US$30 billion and was the country's primary source of foreign currency. At 2006 levels of production, oil proceeds represented about 18.7% of gross domestic product (GDP). However, the importance of the hydrocarbon sector to Iran's economy has been far greater. The oil and gas industry has been the engine of economic growth, directly affecting public development projects, the government's annual budget, and most foreign exchange sources.

Energy in Iraq plays a crucial role in both the national economy and the global energy markets due to the country's vast oil reserves and significant status within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
