Marutirtha Hinglaj (English: Hinglaj, the Desert Shrine) is a 1959 Indian Bengali-language drama film directed and produced by Bikash Roy. [1] This was based on a same name travelogue of Bengali novelist Kalikananda Abadhuta. [2] [3] [4] The film was made under the banner of Bikash Roy Productions and Janata Pictures and Theatres Limited. [5] The lead actors are Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee, and Anil Chatterjee. The music is by the Hemanta Mukherjee.
The plot revolves around a religious but dangerous journey towards the sacred temple at Hinglaj. A group of pilgrims undertake the long journey through the desert to reach the holy shrine where pilgrims can be washed of all their sins. The group rescue a dying couple, Thirumal and Kunti, who also join in the pilgrimage. While they walk hundreds of miles through the desert they face hardship and life-threatening challenges.
The film was directed, produced and screenplay by Bikash Roy who also acted in the film. The film was originally shot in Digha. A desert was created on the beach sands near Digha. Bikash Roy brought two camels for use in the film. In a highly dramatic moment, a mentally deranged Thirumal suddenly grabs Kunti by the throat. Uttam Kumar has been quiet since a few days that scene was taken. Uttam Kumar visions is quite unusual. When the scene shooting started Uttam pressed Sabitri's throat it was as if he was no longer himself. Sabitri was getting suffocated. Director Bikash Roy rushed after finishing the shot. Sabitri then has no sense, he vomited and passed out. After curing him with water, Bikash Roy scolded to Uttam Kumar. Then Uttam apologized to Sabitri. In the end of the film director was saved by four bottles of Bengali liquor. The film was also shot in Chakulia, two days in Ghatsila. Far way from Digha city the camera will capture the desert of Baluchistan on the sand. [6]

Uttam Kumar, widely known as the Mahanayak, was an Indian film actor, producer, director, screenwriter, composer, and playback singer who predominantly worked in Bengali cinema. His career spanned three decades, from the late 1940s until his death in 1980. Kumar is regarded as one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema and also the most popular and successful film star in Bengal.
Sabitri Chatterjee is an Indian actress who is known for her work in Bengali theatre and cinema. Her career spans more than 60 years. She is the recipient of BFJA Awards for two times. In 1999, she was conferred with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting in Bengali theatre. In 2013, she was awarded by the Government of West Bengal its highest civilian award; the Banga Bibhushan. In 2014, Government of India conferred upon her its fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri.
Tapan Sinha was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time forming a legendary quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He was primarily a Bengali filmmaker who worked both in Hindi cinema and Bengali cinema, directing films like Kabuliwala (1957), Louha-Kapat, Sagina Mahato (1970), Apanjan (1968), Kshudhita Pashan and children's film Safed Haathi (1978) and Aaj Ka Robinhood. Sinha started his career in 1946, as a sound engineer with New Theatres film production house in Kolkata, then in 1950 left for England where he worked at Pinewood Studios for next two years, before returning home to start his six decade long career in Indian cinema, making films in Bengali, Hindi and Oriya languages, straddling genres from social realism, family drama, labor rights, to children's fantasy films. He was one of the acclaimed filmmakers of Parallel Cinema movement of India.
Ogo Bodhu Shundori is a 1981 Bengali comedy film, directed by Salil Dutta. It was one of the last films of the iconic Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, who died during production. A lookalike, Prabir Kumar, was brought in to stand in for Kumar for the final sections of the film and for the song O Daddy, O Mummy. The film starred also Moushumi Chatterjee, Sumitra Mukherjee, Ranjit Mallick and Santosh Dutta. The film became blockbuster hit at the box office.

Uttar Falguni is a 1963 Indian Bengali-language drama film directed by Asit Sen and produced by Uttam Kumar, starring Suchitra Sen in a double role, Bikash Roy and Dilip Mukherjee in lead. At the 11th National Film Awards, the film was awarded the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. Music of the film composed by Robin Chatterjee. The film was remade by director Asit Sen himself in Hindi, as Mamta (1966) again with Suchitra Sen as the lead. The film was also remade in Tamil as Kaviya Thalaivi (1970), and in Malayalam as Pushpanjali (1972).
Nishi Padma is a 1970 Bengali drama film written and directed by Arabinda Mukhopadhyay, based on a short story Hinger Kochuri by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, and starring Uttam Kumar and Sabitri Chatterjee as leads. The film had music by Nachiketa Ghosh, and went on to win two awards at the 1970 National Film Awards: Manna Dey won Best Male Playback Singer for "Ja Khushi Ora Bole", while Sandhya Mukherjee won the Best Female Playback Singer for "Ore Sakol Sona Molin Holo".
