Mary Herrera (born August 27,1959) is an American politician. She is the former New Mexico Secretary of State serving from 2006 to 2010.
A native of Albuquerque,Herrera graduated from West Mesa High School in 1977. She received both her Bachelors and master's degrees in Business Administration from the College of Santa Fe (now currently Santa Fe University of Art and Design). She received a Certificate of Program Administration for Senior Executives from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University [1] and various certificates in Labor,Employment,and Benefits Law from the Institute for Applied Management. [2]
Prior to being elected Secretary,Herrera held many offices within the Bernalillo County government. She started her career as a typist,working her way up to an Assistant Comptroller,to the Director of Human Resources. In 2000,she was elected county clerk of Bernalillo county and re-elected in 2004.
As a Democrat,she continued the long line of Democratic Secretaries in the State of New Mexico for over 80 years. However she lost her re-election bid in 2010 to Republican Dianna Duran.
According to New Mexico law,at the time of her tenure,as the Secretary of State,Herrera was second in line of succession for governor after the Lieutenant Governor.
The New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a commuter rail system serving the metropolitan areas of Albuquerque and Santa Fe,New Mexico. It is administered by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and the Rio Metro Regional Transit District,a regional transportation agency,while Herzog Transit Services currently holds the contract for the operation and maintenance of the line &equipment. Phase I of the system,operating on an existing right-of-way from Belen to Bernalillo that NMDOT purchased from BNSF Railway,opened in July 2006. Phase II,the extension of the line to Santa Fe,opened in December 2008. Daily ridership,as of February 2019,was 2,200 trips per day. In 2023,the system had a ridership of 584,400,or about 2,600 per weekday as of the first quarter of 2024.
Pueblo of Isleta is an unincorporated community and Tanoan pueblo in Bernalillo County,New Mexico,United States,originally established in the c. 14th century. The Southern Tiwa name of the pueblo is Shiewhibak (Shee-eh-whíb-bak) meaning "a knife laid on the ground to play whib", a traditional footrace. Its people are a federally recognized tribe.
