Bloemfontein, also known as Bloem, is the capital city of the Free State Province of South Africa; and, as the judicial capital of the nation, one of South Africa's three national capitals and is the seventh largest city in South Africa. Situated at an elevation of 1,395 m (4,577 ft) above sea level, the city is home to approximately 520,000 residents and forms part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality which has a population of 747,431. It was one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Mangaung is a Sesotho name meaning "place of leopards". Legend has it that when the first settlers arrived, they were stunned by the vast plains that were roamed freely by leopards. People (communities) could also have been referred and named after these ferocious animals. It was not uncommon for the Basotho to name warrior regiments after certain animals including the felines.

In 2020, Mlamleli was ousted as Mayor of Mangaung and arrested over a controversial asbestos contract stemming from her time with the MEC.
Lehlohonolo James Letuka is a South African politician serving as a Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature for the Democratic Alliance since May 2014. Letuka is the father of Patricia Kopane, the party's former provincial leader in the Free State.
