The season was filmed March 18 – April 25, 2012, and premiered on September 19, 2012, with a special 90-minute episode. It is the first season since Survivor: All-Stars to begin with three tribes and the seventh season overall to feature returning castaways.

Following the previous season, Sharon Osbourne left the program following a dispute with the network, leading to Mel B replacing her. "We're going to use the serendipitous gift of Season 6 to explain with flashbacks what happened when she was working for the Pentagon and why she came back as a much tougher character. I've never had a chance to flex my acting muscles like this on the show!" said A. J. Cook. The season also featured the return of Paget Brewster and Jayne Atkinson for the 200th episode, which aired on February 5, 2014. On May 14, 2014, it was revealed at the end of the season finale that Alex Blake would be leaving the show.
The ninth season of American talent show competition series America's Got Talent was broadcast on NBC from May 27 to September 17, 2014. Following the previous season, the program underwent a number of format changes, including the second audition stage and to the Wildcard format. The most significant change to be made was the inclusion of the "Golden Buzzer", an element that was being introduced into the Got Talent franchise around that time. It was the fourth Survivor season filmed in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, the same location as Survivor: Nicaragua, Survivor: Redemption Island, and Survivor: San Juan del Sur, and features three tribes of six new players divided by social class: white collar, blue collar, and no collar. This season introduced the concept of an extra vote, in which one player can vote twice at a single Tribal Council, which was offered during the season's Survivor Auction. This season also saw the return of the firemaking tiebreaker challenge in the final four, last used in Survivor: Gabon.
