Matej Tonin (born 30 July 1983) [1] is a Slovenian politician.
Tonin graduated from political sciences at the University of Ljubljana in 2007. [1] A member of the New Slovenia (NSi) party,he was seen as one of the key people that helped the party win seats in the 2011 parliamentary election, [2] having been absent in the 2008–2011 assembly. Tonin was also elected an MP in the 2014 and 2018 election.
In January 2018,Ljudmila Novak announced her resignation as the president of NSi and Tonin took over the party. [2]
On 22 June 2018 Tonin was elected 13th Speaker of the National Assembly. Following the formation of the coalition around Marjan Šarec,Tonin stepped down on 23 August 2018 to be replaced by Dejan Židan of Social Democrats. [3]
On 13 March 2020,Tonin became the Minister of Defence in the 14th Government of Slovenia. [4]
The Slovenian People's Party is a conservative,agrarian,Christian-democratic political party in Slovenia. Formed in 1988 under the name of Slovenian Peasant Union as the first democratic political organization in Yugoslavia,it changed its name to Slovenian People's Party in 1992. On 15 April 2000,it merged with the Slovene Christian Democrats to form the SLS+SKD Slovenian People's Party,and changed its name in 2001 to Slovenian People's Party.
New Slovenia –Christian Democrats is a Christian-democratic and conservative political party in Slovenia. Since 2018,it is led by Matej Tonin. It is the successor of the League of Communists of Slovenia. As of 2022,the party is a member of a three-party coalition government with Robert Golob's Freedom Movement alongside The Left,as well as a full member of the Party of European Socialists and Progressive Alliance.
The Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia is a political party in Slovenia led by Ljubo Jasnič. The party claims broadly liberal values with a strong focus on the interests of the retired and the elderly. Despite being part of virtually every governmental coalition of Slovenia since it started appearing on voting ballots,the party only secured 0.66% of all votes at the most recent Slovenian parliamentary election in 2022 and thus failed to secure any seats in the National Assembly.
The National Assembly is the general representative body of Slovenia. According to the Constitution of Slovenia and the Constitutional Court of Slovenia,it is the major part of the distinctively incompletely bicameral Slovenian Parliament,the legislative branch of the Republic of Slovenia. It has 90 members,elected for a four-year term. 88 members are elected using the party-list proportional representation system and the remaining two,using the Borda count,by the Hungarian and Italian-speaking ethnic minorities,who have an absolute veto in matters concerning their ethnic groups.
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovenia on 4 December 2011 to elect the 90 deputies of the National Assembly. This was the first early election in Slovenia's history. The election was surprisingly won by the center-left Positive Slovenia party,led by Zoran Janković. However,he failed to be elected as the new prime minister in the National Assembly,and the new government was instead formed by a right-leaning coalition of five parties,led by Janez Janša,the president of the second-placed Slovenian Democratic Party. The voter turnout was 65.60%.
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovenia on 13 July 2014 to elect the 90 deputies of the National Assembly. The early election,less than three years after the previous one,was called following the resignation of Alenka Bratušek's government in May. Seventeen parties participated,including seven new parties,some of which formed only months before the election took place. Party of Miro Cerar (SMC),a new party led by lawyer and professor Miro Cerar,won the election with over 34% of the vote and 36 seats. Seven political parties won seats in the National Assembly. Three political parties left the Assembly,including Zoran Janković's Positive Slovenia,the winner of the 2011 election. A leftist United Left party entered the Assembly for the first time,winning six seats.
Dejan Židan is a Slovenian politician,former leader of the Social Democrats,and the former speaker of the National Assembly of Slovenia.
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovenia on 3 June 2018. The elections were originally expected to be held later in June 2018,but after the resignation of Prime Minister Miro Cerar on 14 March 2018 all parties called for snap elections. They were the third consecutive snap elections after 2011 and 2014.

The 8th National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia was elected in the 3 June 2018 Slovenian parliamentary elections. At the order of President Borut Pahor,it first convened on 22 June 2018. The assembly was in session during the outgoing 12th Government of Prime Minister Miro Cerar and elected the 13th and 14th governments. It was the fourth consecutive time in which centre-left and left-wing parties had a majority.
The 13th Government of Slovenia was elected on 13 September 2018 by the 8th National Assembly. It is the first minority government in the history of Slovenia. On 27 January 2020,following the resignation of the Minister of Finance Andrej Bertoncelj,Prime Minister Marjan Šarec announced his resignation. The National Assembly was informed on the same day following which the term of the 13th Government ended. Šarec is the third consecutive and in total fourth Prime Minister to resign,before him Miro Cerar,Alenka Bratušek and Janez Drnovšek resigned as well,the latter due to being elected President of the Republic. The 13th Government is the fifth consecutive and eighth government in total to not finish its term.

The government was confirmed on 13 March 2020,amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Between 2004 and 2008 he served as Minister of Economy in the 8th Government of Slovenia,and between 2012 and 2013 as Minister of Labour,Family and Social Affairs in the 10th Government of Slovenia. From 2020 to 2022 he was Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning in the 14th Government of Slovenia.
The Freedom Movement is a social-liberal political party in Slovenia. It was founded on 26 January 2022,as the successor of the Party of Green actions (Z.DEJ). At the January congress,Robert Golob was elected as the party's first president and the party received its new identity and name.
