Matt Llano (born August 1, 1988) is an American long distance runner who competes in half marathon and marathon events. He represented his country at the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.

Running career

High school

Matt Llano was a fourth-place finisher at 2005 Maryland 4A State Cross Country Championship and an eighth place finisher at the 2004 Maryland 4A State Cross Country Championship representing Broadneck High School. [2] [3] He finished behind high school teammate Matthew Centrowitz Jr. as a Junior and Senior to lead their team to Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association state team titles. [4] By the time he graduated from Broadneck, he had been named in the All-County selection on two occasions. [5]

Collegiate

Matt Llano was an All-American in cross country for the Richmond Spiders in 2010. Matt earned 10k All-American status on the track. [6] Matt finished third at the 2007 USA Junior outdoor national championships at IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium IUPUI in Indianapolis, Indiana in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:19.03 to earn USATF Jr. All-America honors. [7]

Professional

In January 2014, Matt Llano ran 61:47 in Houston at the USA Half Marathon Championships to earn 5th place. At the 2014 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships on March 29, 2014 races were held in Copenhagen, Denmark, Matt Llano finished 35th. [8] On 22 October 2015, Matt Llano ran the 2015 Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:12:28. [9] [10]

Personal Life

In 2013 Matt Llano came out as gay in his blog becoming the first openly gay professional long distance runner at that time. [11]

Ryan Hall is a retired American long-distance runner who holds the U.S. record in the half marathon. With his half marathon record time (59:43), he became the first U.S. runner to break the one-hour barrier in the event. He is also the only American to run a sub-2:05 marathon. However, this time is not eligible to be a record due to the course being point-to-point and a net-downhill course. Hall won the marathon at the 2008 United States Olympic trials and placed tenth in the Olympic marathon in Beijing.

Galen Rupp is an American long-distance runner. He competed in the Summer Olympics in 2008 in Beijing, 2012 in London, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro and 2021 in Tokyo. He won the silver medal in the men's 10,000 meters in London and the bronze medal in the men's marathon in Rio de Janeiro. Rupp competed for the University of Oregon and trained under Alberto Salazar as a member of the Nike Oregon Project. He won the 2017 Chicago Marathon, becoming the first American to do so since Khalid Khannouchi in 2002. Rupp won the marathon at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta with a time of 2:09:20, and qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where he finished eighth.

Bates also represented the United States in the marathon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, where she set a personal best of 2:23.18 and finished seventh. Herb Lindsay is an American former long-distance runner. He competed in track, road and cross country running disciplines. He was the silver medalist in the 5000-meter run at the 1979 Pan American Games, finishing behind compatriot Matt Centrowitz. He also represented his country at the 1982 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, coming 69th overall and sixth in the team rankings.
