The Matthew Flinders Medal and Lecture of the Australian Academy of Science is awarded biennially to recognise exceptional research by Australian scientists in the physical sciences. Nominations can only be made by Academy Fellows.

The Australian Academy of Science was founded in 1954 by a group of distinguished Australians, including Australian Fellows of the Royal Society of London. The first president was Sir Mark Oliphant. The academy is modelled after the Royal Society and operates under a Royal charter; as such, it is an independent body, but it has government endorsement. The Academy Secretariat is in Canberra, at the Shine Dome.

Edmund Alfred Cornish DSc, FAA was one of Australia's eminent mathematicians and statisticians. He was appointed an (inaugural) Foundation Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. He worked as the Officer-in-charge in Mathematical Statistics section of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Adelaide from 1941. In 1954 he became the Chief of this division and served till his death in 1973.

Maxwell Frank Cooper Day was an Australian ecologist and the oldest living Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. Born in Sydney, New South Wales, he turned 100 in December 2015. He is well known for his work on myxomatosis and the myxoma virus in the 1940s in conjunction with Professor Frank Fenner.

Albert Lloyd George Rees CBE, DSc, FAA (1916–1989) was an Australian chemical physicist.

Professor Michael Ian Bruce DSc FAA (1938-), born and educated in England, became Professor of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Adelaide in 1973, and was the Angas Professor of Chemistry at the University of Adelaide from 1982 until his retirement in 2009.

Professor Clifford Walter Emmens DSc, Hon DVSc, FAA was an English-born Australian veterinary scientist and biometrician. He was appointed Professor of Veterinary Physiology at the University of Sydney in 1950, and elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1956.

Marcello Costa is an Italian-born Australian medical researcher, academic, and public health advocate. He specializes in the structure and functions of the enteric nervous system. He taught in Turin, Melbourne, and Helsinki before moving to Adelaide in 1975 where he was a foundation lecturer at the Flinders Medical School, building the new discipline of neuroscience at the college. He was at Flinders University where he held the title of Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor of Neurophysiology in the Department of Physiology. In 2021 Marcello retired from his position at Flinders University.

Horace Newton Barber FAA FRS was an Australian botanist and geneticist, Foundation Professor of Botany at the University of Tasmania (1947–1963) and Foundation Professor of Botany at the University of New South Wales (1964–1971).

Brian Leslie Norman Kennett is a mathematical physicist and seismologist. He is now a professor emeritus at the Australian National University.
