Matti Anttonen

Matti Kalervo Anttonen (born 27 November 1957) [1] is a Finnish diplomat and the present Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland since 1 March 2018. [2]

Early life and education

Anttonen was born in Tampere and graduated from the Turku School of Economics, obtaining a master's degree from the University of Turku. [3] [4]

Career

Anttonen joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1986. Between 1987 and 1991, he served as Assistant Secretary and Secretary of the Moscow Embassy, then three years at the Geneva Permanent Representation in the UN and between 1994 and 1996 he was responsible for the EU-Russia relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 1998, Anttonen was appointed Head of the Russian Unit and in 2001 the Deputy Director of the East Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Between 2002 and 2006, he served as the Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy in Washington, and then as the Energy Coordinator in Helsinki 2007–2008, until he was appointed Ambassador to Moscow. [5] [1]

Anttonen was the Finnish Ambassador to Sweden from January 2017 until February 2018 [6] as well was Finland's ambassador to Russia from 2008 until the end of April 2012.

In November 2018, Anttonen summoned Russia's Ambassador to Finland Pavel Kuznetsov over the large-scale disruption of Finland's Global Positioning System (GPS) signal during NATO’s largest exercise in decades. [7]

After the Russian Ambassadorship, Anttonen served as the Under-Secretary of State for External Economic Relations. [8]

Between 2000 and 2005, Viinanen served as the diplomatic adviser to Tarja Halonen, the 11th President of Finland, the Deputy Secretary General and Deputy Chief of Cabinet, as well as the Secretary-General and Chief of Cabinet to Halonen from 2005–2009. Between 8 April 2009 and 2014 Viinanen held a position as the Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations.

Päivi Luostarinen

Päivi Luostarinen is a Finnish diplomat. She has been employed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs since 1981 and served as Finnish Ambassador at the Finnish Embassy in London from September 2015 until June 2019.

Tarja Laitiainen is a Finnish diplomat. She started working for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1980. Laitianien was appointed as the Finnish Ambassador to Portugal in Lisbon on October 1, 2016.

Arja Makkonen

Arja Makkonen is a Finnish diplomat. She is an ambassador from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in the Southern Caucasus region of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. She has previously served as Ambassador to Ukraine in Kiev since 2011 and has worked since 2015, including in the Moscow and Warsaw Delegations. Prior to that, she has served as Adviser to the Minister of European Affairs and Foreign Trade. Makkonen joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1989.

Ilkka Olavi Pastinen was a Finnish ambassador who also served as Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations.

Katja Pehrman is a Finnish diplomat. She has been the Finnish OSCE Ambassador since 1 September 2013 and chaired by the Human Dimension Committee in 2016. She started working for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 2002.

Carl Fredrik Ralph Alexander Enckell was a Finnish diplomat.

Maija Lähteenmäki is a Finnish diplomat. She has been Finland's ambassador to Australia in Canberra in 2010-2013 and retired there. She started working with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1974.

Riitta Hannele Resch is a Finnish diplomat. She is a leading expert at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Humanitarian Aid and Policy Unit. Resch worked as an ambassador in Manila from 2004 to 2008. She started working at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1982.

Esko Tapio Hamilo was a Finnish Under-Secretary and diplomat. He is a Bachelor of Political Science from 1971, and has been employed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs since 1972. He was head of office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in years 1985–1987and Foreign Affairs Counselor between 1992–1996 and again 2005–2007.

Kirsti Eskelinen-Liukkonen was an Ambassador of Finland to Ankara from 2008 to 2012. She was the Finnish Ambassador to Latvia in Riga from 2000 to 2004 and after that she was head of the Eastern Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 2008. She started with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1973.

Raija Anne Lammila is a Finnish diplomat.

Satu Mattila-Budich is a Finnish diplomat and Foreign Affairs Counselor. She has been Head of the Permanent Representation of Finland to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, from 1 September 2015. She started working with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1983.

Päivi Hiltunen-Toivio is a Finnish diplomat. She was Finnish Ambassador to Jakarta. She has been in charge from 15 August 2014 to 2018. She started with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1979.

Seija Toro is a Finnish diplomat and Counsellor for Foreign Affairs. Toro holds a Master of Arts degree. From September 1, 2016, she has been a Roving Ambassador at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs for Mali, Niger, Ivory Coast and Senegal. Before that she was the Ambassador of Finland to Maputo, Mozambique, from 1 November 2013. She started working with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1989.

After returning from Algeria in the autumn of 2015, she started as a Foreign Policy Adviser to the Speaker of Parliament. She died on January 1, 2016
