The 1988 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XV Olympic Winter Games, was a winter multi-sport event held in Calgary, Canada, from 13 to 28 February 1988. A total of 1,423 athletes representing 57 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in 46 events from 10 different sports and disciplines. Five new events were contested at these Games—men's and women's Super G in alpine skiing, team events in Nordic combined and ski jumping, and women's 5000 metres in speed skating—and two events returned to the program—men's and women's combined in alpine skiing.

Kalle Jalkanen was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed in the late 1930s. He won a gold medal at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the 4 × 10 km relay. He won the relay along with Sulo Nurmela, Klaes Karppinen and Matti Lähde.
Matti Pitkänen is a Finnish former cross-country skier who competed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He won two medals in the 4 × 10 km relay at the Winter Olympics with a gold in 1976 and a bronze in 1980. He also finished sixth in the 30 km at the 1980 Winter Olympics.
Matti Henrikki Järvinen was a Finnish javelin thrower. He won the Olympic gold medal at the 1932 Summer Olympics ahead of two other Finns, Matti Sippala and Eino Penttilä, with a throw of 72.71 metres. Four of his other five throws would also have been enough to take gold. The three Finns did not take off their tracksuit trousers during the event.
Matti Raivio was a Finnish Cross-country skier who won the 30 km and 50 km events at the 1926 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. At the 1924 Winter Olympics he finished seventh in the 18 km and 50 km races. He abandoned the 50 km event at the 1928 Winter Olympics.
Matti Pietikäinen was a Finnish ski jumper who won a world title in 1954 and placed fourth at the 1948 Winter Olympics, four places above his brother Aatto.
Eino Penttilä was a Finnish javelin thrower who won a bronze medal at the 1932 Summer Olympics, behind teammates Matti Järvinen and Matti Sippala.

Venne "Verner" Järvinen was a Finnish track and field athlete, who competed mostly in throwing events. He won the gold medal in the Greek-style discus in the 1906 Intercalated Games, and the bronze in the 1908 Summer Olympics, becoming the first Finnish Olympic medalist in athletics. He won the Finnish championship in Greek style discus three times in 1909–1911 and held the national record in discus and hammer throw.
Matti Mattsson is a Finnish swimmer. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the Men's 200 metre breaststroke, finishing in 17th place overall in the heats and failing to qualify for the semifinals. In Barcelona at the 2013 Swimming World Championships, he won bronze medal in Men's 200 metre breaststroke. He has qualified to represent Finland at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He won bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Men's 200 metre breaststroke.
Matti Tapio Poikala is a retired Swedish wrestler. He competed in the freestyle lightweight division at the 1964 Summer Olympics, but was eliminated in the second bout. He then won a silver medal at the 1968 European and a bronze at the 1969 world championships in Greco-Roman wrestling, and finished fourth in 1969 in the 74 kg freestyle contest.
Mauno Maisala is a Finnish rower. He competed in the men's coxed four event at the 1964 Summer Olympics.
Matti Jutila is a Canadian wrestler. He competed in two events at the 1964 Summer Olympics. He emigrated from Finland to Sudbury, Ontario in 1956.
Matti Rautiainen is a Finnish ice hockey player. He competed in the men's tournament at the 1976 Winter Olympics.
