Matti Semi (born 26 January 1957) is a Finnish politician and former member of Finnish Parliament, representing the Left Alliance. He was elected to parliament in the 2015 parliamentary election with 2140 votes. [1] Semi was born in Varkaus, where he has been a member of the City Council of Varkaus since 1993. [2] Prior to becoming a politician, Semi was a construction worker and a boxer. In 1978 and 1979 he received the bronze medal in the Finnish boxing championships in the 71 kg class. [3]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Battle of Varkaus</span>

Battle of Varkaus was a battle of the 1918 Finnish Civil War, fought 19–21 February between the Finnish Whites and the Finnish Reds in Varkaus, Leppävirta. The victory was important for the Whites, giving them control of all of Northern Finland. The battle is best known for the bloody Lottery of Huruslahti held afterwards, where the Whites executed up to 180 Reds who had surrendered.

Elias Walfrid Sopanen was a Finnish judge, farmer, and politician. He was born in Savonlinna and belonged at first to the Young Finnish Party, but after its disbandment in 1918, he joined the National Progressive Party. He was Minister of Justice from 21 December 1923 to 18 January 1924. Sopanen served as a Member of the Parliament of Finland from 1913 to 1916. During the Finnish Civil War, Sopanen was the chairman of court that sentenced 87 people to death under unclear circumstances after the Battle of Varkaus. The incident is known as the Lottery of Huruslahti.
