His personal best 13:48, set in 1998, is the seventh best Italian performance of all time. In 1998 it was also the 29th world best performance of the year. [1]

He won six national championships at senior level. [2] For three consecutive years, from 1996 to 1998, he won both the indoor edition on 60 m hs, than the outdoor on 110 m hs.

He is the former 110 meter hurdles champion winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 with a time of 13 seconds. He won the bronze medal in the 2008 Olympic Games and won another bronze at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
