Mayan is a 74-foot wooden schooner designed by John G. Alden and built in Belize in 1947. She is Alden Design No. 356-B - a Centerboard Schooner constructed of Honduran mahogany. Her name was taken from her country of origin of Belize where the Maya civilization developed. Her current home port is San Francisco Bay where she serves as the flagship of the St. Francis Yacht Club. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Mayan is rigged as a transitional schooner with a gaff foresail and a Marconi mainsail. She has an overall length of 73 feet and a beam of 16.5 feet. She is 59.5 feet on deck and 62 feet to the main masthead with the intent to be operated on the Intracoastal Waterway. Her draft ranges from a maximum of 10 feet to a minimum of 4.5 feet through the use of a lifting centerboard. She has a ballast of 10,000 pounds and a displacement of 68,000 pounds. She was originally built White Oak for the frames, Honduran Somosa for the heavy timbers, Honduran mahogany for the planking (fastened with iron nails) and yellow pine for ceiling carvel planking Teak decking atop White oak deck frames. She was significantly rebuilt in 2005 with purple heart frames and bronze fastened double-planked with sepele and cedar set in epoxy. [2] [3] [4]
Mayan accommodates eight guests and requires a crew of three to sail. [1] [3]
Mayan was designed by John Alden's office in 1946 for Paul and Charles Allen, Paul served as a WWII Navy captain, and was a revision on their Design No. 356 from 1928. C. Allen's son, Paul Allen led the construction team at Tewes Dockyard near Belize City, in the former British Honduras. Mayan was sailed to New York City after launching. She was sold in 1948 and served in the charter trade under a series of owners through the 1950s and 1960s. [2] [3] [4]
In 1969, musician David Crosby found Mayan in Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and purchased her for $22,500 borrowed from Peter Tork. He sailed her from Florida through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal to a new home port in Sausalito, California. In 1970, Crosby began living on Mayan full-time and wrote rock songs such as Wooden Ships, Carry Me, and Lee Shore while aboard. Crosby eventually moved Mayan to Santa Barbara, California. He owned her for 46 years. [1] [2] [6]
In 2005, Mayan was extensively rebuilt by master shipwright Wayne Ettel in Wilmington Harbor, California At that time her Mercedes Benz engine was entirely rebuilt, much of her rigging replaces, and various systems improved or replaced. [1] [6]
In 2014, Stacey & Beau Vrolyk purchased Mayan from Crosby and moved her to Santa Cruz, California which remains her home port. From 2014 to 2018 during the off-season, the Vrolyk's returned Mayan to Wayne Ettel's boatyard and had her cockpit replaced, new fuel tanks and plumbing made, a holding tank added, a new head and shower built, her rail caps replaced, her Sampson post and many more of her frames replaced, and removed the white paint and varnished the cabin sides and rails. In 2022, master rigger Matthew Coale of Santa Cruz converted her from a staysail schooner back into her original design as a transitional schooner and outfitted her for classics racing. The S.S.S.Lotus is a historic gaff rigged schooner. Her home port is Sodus Bay in Wayne County, New York, United States. She is owned and operated by the "Friends of the Schooner Lotus."
The schooner J. & E. Riggin, a National Historic Landmark, was built on the Maurice River in Dorchester, New Jersey in 1927. She is one of a small number of surviving two-masted schooners, once one of the most common sailing ships in North American waters. Now based in Rockland, Maine, she serves as a "windjammer" offering sailing cruises to tourists.
The American Eagle, originally Andrew and Rosalie, is a two-masted schooner serving the tourist trade out of Rockland, Maine. Launched in 1930 at Gloucester, Massachusetts, she was the last auxiliary schooner to be built in that port, and one of Gloucester's last sail-powered fishing vessels. A National Historic Landmark, she is also the oldest known surviving vessel of the type, which was supplanted not long afterward by modern trawlers.
Grace Bailey, also known for many years as Mattie, is a two-masted schooner whose home port is Camden Harbor, Camden, Maine. Built in 1882 in Patchogue, New York, she is one of four surviving two-masted wooden-hulled schooners, once the most common vessel in the American coasting trade. She was one of the first ships in the fleet of historic vessels known as "Maine windjammers", which offer cruises in Penobscot Bay and the Maine coast, entering that service in 1939. She last underwent major restoration in 1989–90. She was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992.
Isaac H. Evans, originally Boyd N. Sheppard, is a two-masted schooner berthed in Rockland, Maine. She is a Maine windjammer, serving the tourist trade. Built in 1886 in Mauricetown, New Jersey, she is the oldest of a small number of surviving oyster schooners, used in service of the oyster harvesting industry in the coastal waters of New Jersey. She was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992.
Lewis R. French is a gaff-rigged topsail schooner sailing out of Camden, Maine as a "Maine windjammer" offering 3 to 6 night cruises to tourists. Built in 1871, she is the oldest known two-masted schooner in the United States, and one of a small number of this once-common form of vessel in active service. The ship was designated a US National Historic Landmark in 1992.
Stephen Taber is a two-masted schooner, built in 1871, operating as a "windjammer" in the tourist trade out of Rockland, Maine. A National Historic Landmark, she is one of a small number of surviving schooners originally built for the Atlantic coasting trade, and one of only three with a centerboard, allowing access through shallow channels and to shallow landing points. She is named for New York lawyer and politician Stephen Taber, and has a well-documented history of continuous service since her construction.
The three-masted schooner Victory Chimes, also known as Edwin and Maud or Domino Effect, is a US National Historic Landmark. She is the last surviving Chesapeake Ram schooner. The boat on the Maine State Quarter is meant to resemble the Victory Chimes.
The Edna E. Lockwood is a Chesapeake Bay bugeye, the last working oyster boat of her kind. She is located at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in Saint Michaels, Maryland. She was built in 1889 at Tilghman Island, Maryland by John B. Harrison and is of nine-log construction, similar to the smaller log canoe, and was launched on October 5, 1889, for Daniel Haddaway, at a cost of $2,200. She worked for at least seven sets of owners from 1899 until 1967, and was then sailed as a yacht until donated to the museum in 1973. The museum undertook an extensive restoration of the Lockwood from 1975 through 1979, which restored the bugeye to its 1910 appearance with the "patent stern" that had been added sometime prior to that year. She is the last bugeye retaining the sailing rig and working appearance of the type. Her length is 53.5 feet (16.3 m), with a 15.25 feet (4.65 m) beam and a draft of 2.58 feet (0.79 m) with the centerboard up, and a maximum sail area of approximately 1700 square feet.
The Rebecca T. Ruark is a Chesapeake Bay skipjack built at Taylor's Island, Maryland. She is homeported at Tilghman Island, Maryland. Built in 1896, she is the oldest surviving skipjack in the Chesapeake Bay fleet. She was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003.
The William B. Tennison is a Chesapeake Bay bugeye built in 1899 and converted to an oyster buy-boat in 1906–07. With the conversion her sail rig was removed and an engine inserted, and is the only surviving example of this conversion. Her construction marks a transition between log construction and plank construction. She is homeported at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland. The Tennison is reputed to be the second oldest licensed passenger vessel in the United States.
Samuel P. Ely is a shipwreck in Two Harbors, Minnesota listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was a schooner that sailed the Great Lakes carrying iron ore, coal, and other bulk freight. It was built in 1869 and was a fairly typical example of the 200-foot schooner built in the 1870s, though she was reinforced for the demands of carrying iron ore.
The Sparrow-Hawk was a 'small pinnace' similar to the full-rigged pinnace Virginia that sailed for the English Colonies in June 1626. She is the earliest ship to participate in the first decades of English settlement in the New World to have survived to the present day.
Kathleen and May is the last remaining British built wooden hull three masted top sail schooner. Registered in Bideford, North Devon, but presently based in Gloucester, she is listed as part of the National Historic Fleet.
Endeavour II was a three-masted auxiliary barque built in Vancouver in 1968 and originally named Monte Cristo. She was built along the lines of the brigantine Albatross as published in Uffa Fox's Second Book of Boats.
Bagheera, formerly Beacon Rock, is a historic schooner normally berthed at the Maine State Pier in Portland, Maine. She is a two-masted auxiliary rigged schooner, built in 1924 by the noted naval architect John G. Alden, and is noted for her racing success on the Great Lakes. She is now owned and operated by the Portland Schooner Company, which offers sailing tours of Casco Bay, using Bagheera and Wendameen. Bagheera was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
Wendameen is a historic schooner normally berthed at the Maine State Pier on Commercial Street in Portland, Maine. She is a two-masted auxiliary rigged schooner, designed in 1912 by the noted naval architect John G. Alden. She is now owned and operated by the Portland Schooner Company, which offers sailing tours of Casco Bay, using Wendameen and Bagheera. Wendameen was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
Surprise is a two-masted former racing schooner berthed in Camden, Maine. Built in 1917–18 in Rockport, Massachusetts, she is one of a small number of surviving schooners designed by noted naval architect Thomas F. McManus. She currently serves as a "windjammer", providing daily cruises in Penobscot Bay. She was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
When and If is a yacht designed by John Alden and commissioned by then Colonel George S. Patton, a widely regarded American war hero. It was built in 1939 as a private yacht by boatbuilder F.F. Pendleton in Wiscasset, Maine. It was constructed of double planked mahogany over black locust frames and an oak keel.
Gitana is a classic yacht built in 1936 after plans of American Naval Architect John Alden.
