The Mayo Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested since 1923 by the top Mayo GAA clubs.

Contents

In its current format, the Mayo Senior Championship begins in mid-summer. The 4 participating teams are into one groups and play each other in a round-robin system. The group winners and the runners-up proceed to the final match. The other two teams play the Senior B final. The winner of the Mayo Senior Championship qualifies for the Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship.

Tooreen are the title holders, defeating Ballyhaunis by 1–21 to 0–22 after extra time in the 2024 final.

History

Team participation

As of 2024, the competition is contested by teams representing Ballyhaunis, Castlebar, St. Ciaran's and Tooreen. St Ciaran's are a divisional team made up of Intermediate and Junior club teams.

Ballina, Belmullet and Westport no longer compete in the Senior grade.

Qualification for subsequent competitions

At the end of the championship, the winning team qualify to the subsequent Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship, the winner of which progresses to the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship.

Trophy

The trophy presented to the winners is the TJ Tyrrell Cup.

Tooreen Hurling Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Tooreen, County Mayo, Ireland.

Keith Higgins is an Irish sportsperson. He has played both Gaelic football and hurling for Mayo GAA, the former until his retirement in January 2021. He also plays both sports for his club Ballyhaunis.

The Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship is an annual club competition in Connacht. The Connacht Intermediate Championship was introduced in 2005 for teams deemed not eligible for the senior grade. It forms second tier of Connacht club hurling. Prior to 2008, county champions competed in the senior grade, but since then the senior champions from Mayo, Roscommon and London compete at intermediate level along with the Galway intermediate champions, who receive a bye to the final.

The 2021–22 All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship was the 17th and current staging of the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's intermediate inter-county club hurling tournament. It will be the first club championship to be completed in two years as the 2020-21 series was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The championship began on 20 November 2021 and ended on 5 February 2022.

The 2022–23 All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship was the 18th staging of the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's intermediate inter-county club hurling tournament. The draws for the respective provincial championships took place at various stages between June and September 2022. The championship ran from 30 October 2022 to 14 January 2023.

Pierce Higgins was an Irish hurler. At club level he played with Ballyhaunis and was also a member of the Mayo senior hurling team.

The 2024–25 All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship is the 20th staging of the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's intermediate inter-county club hurling tournament. The championship is scheduled to run from 26 October 2024 to January 2025.
