Tooreen Hurling Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Tooreen, County Mayo, Ireland.

Tooreen is located in the parish of Aghamore approximately four miles (6.4 km) from the town of Ballyhaunis in eastern County Mayo which is the county's hurling stronghold. [1]

Players are drawn from the Tooreen area as well as from the Aghamore, Ballyhaunis, Kilkelly and Knock areas. The club is affiliated, as an exclusive hurling club, to the Mayo County Board.

History

The club was formed in 1957 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007.

The club won its first Mayo Senior Hurling Championship title in 1966 and is the holder of 33 county senior titles and is the current (2023) champion.

In 2017, the club became the first Mayo team, and the first from outside Galway, to win the Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship. They were four-point winners over Ballinderreen of Galway in Athleague, winning by 1 -14 to 1- 11. [2] [3]

The club has many dual players who play for the neighbouring Gaelic football club with Aghamore GAA club.

Tooreen Hurling Club also has an underage section with teams from U6 to U18. The club colours are blue and white.

The Connacht Intermediate Championship was introduced in 2005 for teams deemed not eligible for the senior grade. It forms second tier of Connacht club hurling. Prior to 2008, county champions competed in the senior grade, but since then the senior champions from Mayo, Roscommon and London compete at intermediate level along with the Galway intermediate champions, who receive a bye to the final.

Joseph McDonagh was an Irish hurler and, later, Gaelic games administrator, who served as the president of the Gaelic Athletic Association from 1997 until 2000. He played hurling with his club Ballinderreen and the Galway senior team.

Aghamore GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in the parish of Aghamore, County Mayo in Ireland. Michael Loftus was an Irish Gaelic footballer, referee and Gaelic games administrator. His league and championship career at senior level with the Mayo county team lasted four seasons from 1949 until 1953.

Ballinderreen GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Ballinderreen, County Galway, Ireland. The club was founded in 1884. The parish already was deeply rooted in hurling before the foundation of the GAA.

The 2020 Connacht Senior Football Championship was the 121st instalment of the annual Connacht Senior Football Championship organised by Connacht GAA. It is one of the four provincial competitions of the 2020 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. The winning team (Mayo) received the J. J. Nestor Cup, named after J. J.
