The African National Congress (ANC) is the Republic of South Africa's governing political party. It has been the ruling party of post-apartheid South Africa since the election of Nelson Mandela in the 1994 election, winning every election since then. Cyril Ramaphosa, the incumbent President of South Africa, has served as leader of the ANC since 18 December 2017.
Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki is a South African politician who served as the second president of South Africa from 16 June 1999 to 24 September 2008. On 20 September 2008, with about nine months left in his second term, Mbeki announced his resignation after being recalled by the National Executive Committee of the ANC, following a conclusion by judge C. R. Nicholson of improper interference in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), including the prosecution of Jacob Zuma for corruption. On 12 January 2009, the Supreme Court of Appeal unanimously overturned judge Nicholson's judgement but the resignation stood.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is a political party in South Africa. The party has been led by Velenkosini Hlabisa since the party's 2019 National General Conference. Mangosuthu Buthelezi founded the party in 1975 and led it until 2019. The IFP is currently the fourth largest party in the National Assembly of South Africa, in 2014 yielding third place to the Economic Freedom Fighters, formed in 2013.
Otta Helene Maree, known as Helen Zille, is a South African politician. She has served as the Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance since 20 October 2019. From 2009 until 2019, she was the Premier of the Western Cape province for two five-year terms, and a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. She served as Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance from 2007 to 2015 and as Mayor of Cape Town from 2006 to 2009.
Ebrahim Rasool is a South African politician and diplomat who served as the South African Ambassador to the United States from 2010 to 2015, Member of the National Assembly from 2009 to 2010, and the 5th Premier of the Western Cape from 2004 to 2008. He is a member of the African National Congress and has held various leadership positions in the party.
Mosiuoa Gerard Patrick Lekota is a South African politician, who currently serves as the President and Leader of the Congress of the People since 16 December 2008.

Lynne Brown is a South African politician who is a former Minister of Public Enterprises and former Premier of the Western Cape Province. She was born in Cape Town and grew up in Mitchell's Plain. She was appointed Premier of the Western Cape following the resignation of Ebrahim Rasool in July 2008. Previously, she was Minister for Economic Development and Tourism. She is a member of the African National Congress and elected member of its National Executive Committee in 2007 and 2012. Like her predecessor Ebrahim Rasool she is also from a coloured background. She is the fourth coloured premier of the Western Cape, and the second from the African National Congress, and is the first openly gay person to be appointed to a cabinet post in any African government.
Zwelini Lawrence Mkhize is a South African doctor, legislator and politician who has served as the Minister of Health since 30 May 2019. He previously served as the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2018 to 2019. He was the 5th Premier of KwaZulu-Natal from 2009 to 2013. Mkhize is a member of the African National Congress and was the party's Treasurer-General between 2012 and 2017.
The Congress of the People (COPE) is a South African political party formed in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The party was founded by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota, Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 general election. The party was announced following a national convention held in Sandton on 1 November 2008, and was founded at a congress held in Bloemfontein on 16 December 2008. The name echoes the 1955 Congress of the People at which the Freedom Charter was adopted by the ANC and other parties, a name strongly contested by the ANC in a legal move dismissed by the Pretoria High Court.
The politics of the Western Cape are more complex than in most other provinces of South Africa, because, unlike the other provinces, the African National Congress (ANC) does not dominate the political landscape.
Nomvula Paula Mokonyane was the Minister of Environmental Affairs in South Africa, appointed on 22 November 2018 under President Cyril Ramaphosa. She was first appointed to the cabinet of South Africa in May 2014 under President Jacob Zuma, serving as Minister in the Department of Water and Sanitation, and became Minister of Communication under President Cyril Ramaphosa in January 2018. Prior to serving in Cabinet, she was the Premier of Gauteng province, elected following the 2009 South African general election. She is also Honorary President of SA-China People's Friendship Association.
Matsie Angelina "Angie" Motshekga is a South African politician and educator who has served as the Minister of Basic Education and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2009. She was previously involved in the Gauteng provincial government. Motshekga is a member of the African National Congress and a former president of the party's women's league.
Elias Sekgobelo "Ace" Magashule is a South African politician who served as the Premier of the Free State, one of South Africa's nine provinces, from 2009 until 2018. Magashule went into exile in the late 1980s. He was elected to the position by the Free State Legislature on 6 May 2009, replacing Beatrice Marshoff. He was elected Secretary General of the African National Congress in December 2017 during the party's elective conference.
David Dabede Mabuza is the Deputy President of South Africa and Deputy President of the African National Congress (ANC). He is also the former Premier of Mpumalanga.
Tebogo Job Mokgoro is a South African politician and academic serving as the 6th Premier of North West since June 2018. He is also a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature. He is a party member of the African National Congress.
Alvin Botes is a South African African National Congress (ANC) politician who has been serving as the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation since May 2019. He became a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa in February 2018. He served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development from 2009 to 2013 and the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs from 2013 to 2018. Botes was a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2018.
Pemmy Castelina Pamela Majodina is a South African politician serving as a Member of the National Assembly since 2019. A member of the African National Congress, she is the party's chief whip in the assembly. She was formerly a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature between 2004 and 2019 and a Member of the provincial Executive Council for five different portfolios from 2008 to 2019, respectively. Majodina was a Delegate of the National Council of Provinces from 1994 to 2004.
