Md. Nazrul Islam is a former officer of the Bangladesh Civil Service who served as the Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division.
Md. Nazrul Islam was born on 5 June 1959 in Chandrakona of Sherpur Thana,Mymensingh District,East Pakistan,Pakistan to Md. Ansar Ali and Mosammat Rezia Khatun as their first child. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Dhaka in 1982 and enrolled for a master's degree the following year. [1]
Islam joined the public administration cadre of the special Bangladesh Civil Service batch of 1984. [2] He served as the Upazila Executive Officer in Boda,Nabiganj,Bahubal,and Habiganj Sadar Upazila;Deputy Director of the Youth Development Department in Mymensingh;Chief Executive Officer of the District Council in Netrokona;Zonal Settlement Officer in Mymensingh;Director General of the National Academy for Primary Education;Chief Executive Officer of the Dhaka North City Corporation;and Administrator of the Dhaka South City Corporation. As an Additional Secretary,he served as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority. On 15 December 2016,he became a member of the Planning Commission as Acting Secretary and succeeded M.A.N. Siddique as the Secretary of the Road Transport Division on 12 October 2017. [2]
In November 2017,China Harbour Engineering Company attempted to bribe him with $100,000 hidden inside a tea packet. Following the directive of then-Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader,the bribe was returned to the Chinese Embassy. [4]
Although he was scheduled to retire on 4 June 2018,his tenure as Secretary of the Road Division was extended for two years on a contractual basis. [5] In 2020,his contract was extended for another two years. [6] On 21 May 2022,he was replaced by ABM Amin Ullah Nuri. [7]
