Contents

Work first started on the mine in 1978. [1] The mine has five active working pits. It can supply a maximum of seven million tonnes of coal per year. [1] The mine has enough reserves to continue mining until at least 2037. [2]

Owners wanted to replace the existing Meandu mine supply of coal to Tarong with another mine near Kingaroy. [3]

Operators of the mine want to continue extracting coal for decades to come. [4]

Progressive‌ ‌rehabilitation‌ ‌of‌ the Meandu‌ ‌Mine‌ has been implemented from the start. [2]

History

Initially the mine started with enough reserves to supply coal for 25 years. [2] Ownership of the mine was transferred‌ ‌to‌ ‌Stanwell‌ ‌in‌ ‌July‌ ‌2011.‌ [2]

Thiess controlled mining operations at the mine between October 2007 and December 2012. [5] From 2013 mining operations have been conducted by Downer. In 2021, operations were to be taken over by an Indonesian company, PT Bukit Makmur Mandiri Utama or BUMA. [6]

Stanwell Power Station is a coal-fired power generation station located in Stanwell, 23 kilometres (14 mi) south-west of Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. At the time of construction, it was one of the largest industrial developments undertaken in Queensland. With a capacity to generate 1,445 megawatts (MW), Stanwell Power Station supplies electricity for distribution to customers via the state's high voltage electricity grid.

Callide Power Station is an electricity generator at Mount Murchison, Shire of Banana, Queensland, Australia. It is coal powered with eight steam turbines with a combined generation capacity of 1,720 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Callide A was commissioned in 1965, refurbished in 1998 and decommissioned in 2015/16. As of 2018, generation capacity was 1510 MW.

Tarong Power Station

The Tarong Power Station is a coal fired power station located on a 1,500 hectares site in Tarong in the South Burnett Region near the town of Nanango, in Queensland, Australia. The station has a maximum generating capacity of 1,400 megawatts, generated from four turbines. Coal is supplied via a conveyor from Meandu Mine, which is 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) away and is also owned by Stanwell.

Bowen Basin Sedimentary province in Queensland, Australia

The Bowen Basin contains the largest coal reserves in Australia. This major coal-producing region contains one of the world's largest deposits of bituminous coal. The Basin contains much of the known Permian coal resources in Queensland including virtually all of the known mineable prime coking coal. It was named for the Bowen River, itself named after Queensland's first Governor, Sir George Bowen.

Coal in Australia

Coal is mined in every state of Australia. The largest black coal resources occur mainly in Queensland and New South Wales. About 70% of coal mined in Australia is exported, mostly to eastern Asia, and of the balance most is used in electricity generation. In 2019-20 Australia exported 390 Mt of coal as was the world's largest exporter of metallurgical coal and second largest exporter of thermal coal.

The New Acland Mine is located adjacent to Acland township, about 10 km north of Oakey on the Darling Downs in Queensland, Australia. Geologically it is part of the Wallon Coal Measures and contains more than 500 million tonnes of coal that is removed by the open cut method. The mine is owned and operated by New Hope Coal. As of Monday, September 2, 2019, the mine has become mothballed due to extension applications being denied. A stockpile will require trains to run for a little while longer, roughly twelve months.

Meandu Creek Dam is a dam built near Yarraman in Queensland, Australia. The Tarong and Tarong North Power Stations source water from the Brisbane River catchment via a pipeline from Wivenhoe Dam. Cooling tower blowdown water is either discharged directly to Tarong Energy's Meandu Creek Dam or supplied to the nearby Tarong Mine owned by Rio Tinto Coal Australia. Excess water from the mine is discharged back to Meandu Creek Dam. Releases from Meandu Creek Dam supply downstream irrigators on Meandu Creek. In 2019 Stanwell Corporation temporarily stopped discharges into the creek to allow downstream property owners to repair culverts.

Energy in Queensland Overview of the production, consumption, import and export of energy and electricity in Queensland

Queensland's energy policy is based on the year 2000 document called the Queensland Energy Policy: A Cleaner Energy Strategy. The Queensland Government assists energy development through the Department of Energy and Water Supply. The state is noted for its significant contribution to coal mining in Australia. The primary fuel for electricity generation in the state is coal with coal seam gas becoming a significant fuel source. Queensland has 98% of Australia's reserves of coal seam gas. An expansion of energy-intensive industries such as mining, economic growth and population growth have created increased demand for energy in Queensland.
