Megh R. Goyal is an engineer and professor in Puerto Rico, and a Methodist pastor. He has been called the father of irrigation engineering in Puerto Rico. [1]

Education

Goyal earned his high school diploma from Prem Sabha High School in Sangrur; B.Sc. degree in Agricultural Engineering from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana - India; M.Sc. degree (1977) and Ph.D. (1979) from Ohio State University, [2] Columbus, Ohio; and Master of Divinity (2001) from Puerto Rico Evangelical Seminary, Hato Rey – Puerto Rico.

Career

Goyal has worked as a soil conservation inspector, research assistant and lecturer at Haryana Agricultural University, research associate at the Ohio State University, and research agricultural engineer at the Agricultural Experiment Station of University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Campus. He was the first agricultural engineer to receive a professional license in agricultural engineering in 1971,[ citation needed ] from the Institution of Engineers (India), and in 1986, from College of Engineers & Surveyors of Puerto Rico. For his pioneering work on micro-irrigation, he is known as a "Drip Irrigation Man" in Puerto Rico. [3]

Goyal is currently a retired professor of agricultural engineering and biomedical engineering at the College of Engineering of the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Campus and senior editor-in-chief for Apple Academic Press.[ citation needed ]

Goyal has authored journal articles and text books such as: "Introduction to Agriclimatology", Management of Drip/trickle or Micro Irrigation, [4] and Biofluid Dynamics of Human Body Systems [5] [6]

On 16 September 2005, Goyal was named "Father of Irrigation Engineering in Puerto Rico for the 20th Century" by the ASABE – Puerto Rico Section, [1] for his pioneer work on irrigation, [7] evapotranspiration, climatology, and soil and water engineering.[ citation needed ]

Personal life

Goyal was born in Punjab in India. His late parents were natives of Punjab State. Goyal was married to Subhadra Goyal who was a Methodist pastor in Rincon, Puerto Rico. [8] They have three children.

The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (UPRM) or Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) in Spanish, is a public land-grant university in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. UPRM is the second-largest university campus of the University of Puerto Rico system. In addition to its status as a land-grant university, it is also a member of the sea-grant and space-grant research consortia. In 2009, the campus population was composed of 12,108 students, 1,924 regular staff members, and 1,037 members of the education staff. In 2013, the student population remained relatively steady at 11,838, but the instructional faculty dropped to 684. In the second semester of 2019 around 12,166 students where enrolled. UPRM has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) since 1946.

Juan Mari Brás was an advocate for Puerto Rican independence from the United States who founded the Puerto Rican Socialist Party (PSP). On October 25, 2006, he became the first person to receive a Puerto Rican citizenship certificate from the Puerto Rico State Department. His son, Santiago Mari Pesquera, was assassinated by a suspected far-right activist in 1976. In 2009, documents revealed the FBI had known of a plot to assassinate Mari Brás but did not share the information with him.

Olga D. González-Sanabria is a Puerto Rican scientist and inventor. She is the highest-ranking Hispanic at NASA Glenn Research Center, and a member of the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame. González-Sanabria, Director of the Engineering and Technical Services, is responsible for planning and directing a full range of integrated services including engineering, fabrication, testing, facility management and aircraft services for the Glenn Research Center. She played an instrumental role in the development of the "Long Cycle-Life Nickel-Hydrogen Batteries" which helps enable the International Space Station power system.

Carlos Eugenio Chardón Palacios, D.Sc., D.Litt, was the first Puerto Rican mycologist, a high-ranking official in government on agriculture during the 1920s, the first Puerto Rican appointed as Chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico (1931–1935), and the head of the Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration in the mid-to late 1930s during the Great Depression. Herminio M. Brau del Toro, born on, was a Puerto Rican lawyer, engineer, professor, writer and industrialist.

Yomaira Jeannette Pagán Torres is a Puerto Rican chemical engineer. She is a professor in the department of chemical engineer at University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Pagán was formerly a senior engineer at the Dow Chemical Company.

The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (UPRM) or Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM)'s annual commencement exercises are held each mid-June, currently in the Rafael A. Mangual Coliseum. The exercises award undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The Hotel Colegial, also known as Building A and the Athletes' Residence is a student accommodation building which currently serves as the only on-campus dormitory in the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM).
