The first lady of the United States (FLOTUS) is the title held by the hostess of the White House,usually the wife of the president of the United States,concurrent with the president's term in office. Although the first lady's role has never been codified or officially defined,she figures prominently in the political and social life of the United States. Since the early 20th century,the first lady has been assisted by official staff,now known as the Office of the First Lady and headquartered in the East Wing of the White House.

Christopher Samuel Bond is an American attorney,politician and former United States Senator from Missouri and a member of the Republican Party. First elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986,he defeated Democrat Harriett Woods by a margin of 53%–47%. He was re-elected in 1992,1998,and 2004. On January 8,2009,he announced that he would not seek re-election to a fifth term in 2010,and was succeeded by fellow Republican Roy Blunt on January 3,2011. Following his retirement from the Senate,Bond became a partner at Thompson Coburn.
Letitia Tyler was the first lady of the United States from 1841 to 1842 as the wife of President John Tyler. She met Tyler in 1808,and they married in 1813. She managed their plantation in Virginia while her husband progressed his political career at the state capital and in Washington,D.C.,accompanying him only while he was governor of Virginia. She suffered a stroke in 1839 that left her permanently disabled. Tyler became the second lady of the United States when her husband became vice president of the United States in 1841,and she became the first lady when President William Henry Harrison died the following month and her husband ascended to the presidency. She was unable to perform the duties of first lady due to her health,delegating them to her daughter-in-law Priscilla Cooper Tyler. She died of a second stroke on September 10,1842,becoming the first person to die while serving as first lady of the United States. Tyler played virtually no role in her husband's presidency,but she maintained a positive reputation among the American people.
Second lady and second gentleman are honorary titles often used in reference to the spouse of a vice president,or spouse of a lieutenant governor or other second-ranked government official. The title is styled after first lady or first gentleman,which are used to describe the spouse of a president or governor. In discussing both spouses,they may be referred to as the second couple,and if they have children,they are known collectively as the second family.
Matthew Roy Blunt is an American former naval officer and politician who served as the 54th Governor of Missouri from 2005 to 2009. Before his election as governor,Blunt served ten years in the United States Navy,was elected to serve in the Missouri General Assembly in 1998,and as Missouri's Secretary of State in 2000. He grew up in a political family;his father,Roy Blunt,has served in a variety of political offices.
Jeremiah Wilson "Jay" Nixon is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 55th Governor of Missouri from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party,he was first elected to the governorship in 2008 and reelected in 2012. Prior to his tenure as Missouri Governor,he served as the 40th Missouri Attorney General from 1993 to 2009. After leaving public office he joined the Dowd Bennett law firm in St. Louis. As of 2022,he is the most recent Democrat to serve as the Governor of Missouri.
Sarah Steelman is an American Republican politician from Missouri and State Treasurer from 2005 to 2009. She is currently serving in the Office of Administration in Governor Mike Parson’s administration. She did not run for re-election as state treasurer in 2008,having run for governor,and was succeeded in office by Democrat Clint Zweifel on January 12,2009. She was listed in a 2008 article in the New York Times as among seventeen women who may someday run for President of the United States. On November 29,2010,Steelman announced she would run for the U.S. Senate in 2012. She was defeated in the Republican primary by U.S. Representative Todd Akin.
The 2008 Missouri gubernatorial election was held on November 4,2008. Incumbent Republican Governor Matt Blunt decided to retire instead of seeking reelection to a second term in office. Democratic nominee Jay Nixon won the open seat,defeating Republican nominee Kenny Hulshof.
Gallop,Johnson &Neuman,L.C. was a law firm based in St. Louis County,Missouri. Its founding was in 1976 with 10 original attorneys. In the 80's it grew to become the 12th largest corporate law firm in the United States. The firm's headquarters was in the Interco Tower in downtown Clayton,Missouri,a suburb of St. Louis County. The firm no longer practices law and entered a wind down phase on May 1,2012. The reason given on its website was that,"Recently,like all too many companies in America,the law firm of Gallop,Johnson and Neuman has struggled with the challenges resulting from the nation’s current slow economy. Because of those challenges,Gallop has decided that effective May 1,2012 it will no longer engage in the practice of law and will begin the process of winding down the business of the law firm."

The Republican nominee,Missouri Secretary of State Matt Blunt,defeated Democratic State Auditor Claire McCaskill. This gave the Republican Party control of both the governorship and the Missouri General Assembly for the first time in 80 years.
The 2008 Missouri lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 4,2008,to elect the Lieutenant Governor of Missouri. Republican incumbent Peter Kinder won the election narrowly,despite the fact that Democrat Attorney General Jay Nixon won the 2008 Missouri gubernatorial election with over 57% of the vote.
